WHAT I KNEW

Growing up, I always appreciated drawings and paintings. This led me to join painting clubs when I was in elementary school. This was the foundation of my knowledge. It was limited to the technicalities -- how to draw, how add shadows, and how to use perspective. I also thought that interpreting paintings were relative to the viewer. It all depends on After learning all of this, I started to appreciate different artworks. However, I would not say that I was knowledgeable of numerous paintings and artists.

WHAT I LEARNED

During our discussions on different paintings, I learned that there is an objective way in analyzing paintings. The form of the painting - line, shape, value, color, texture, and space are all components of a painting that can be analyzed objectively. I also learned that the different periods, the Renaissance and Baroque, were a reflection of the context in society. In the Renaissance period, Man and his abilities were celebrated, thus many notable works emerged during this period. In the Baroque period, the counter-Reformation was rampant, that is why the Catholic church commissioned many artists to create works for the church. Additionally, it is possible to distinguish the period where artworks came from because styles can be attributed to the period.

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW

What I want to know in future lessons is the starting point of the transition to different styles. For example, Renaissance period artworks were very realistic, but eventually in the Baroque period, shadows and contrasting colors were used. I also want to know about the artwork of artists that did not reach the mainstream stage of the art world. Additionally, I would like to know about artists now who are making a mark in the art world.
