SKC was a great human being to me who helped me in my difficult time completely out of his own affection and concern for the cause. It was really a memorable acknowedgement in my life. He was always keen to talk with us as and when we have seen him in Triennial. He was worried about his wife's health when I last met him. He was also a very good teacher who taught us primarily real analysis towards the end of his career.

I pray for him to rest in peace and send moral support to his children and grand children at this moment.

Shoutir Babu was a mentor, guide, and role model to many, and his humanitarian spirit has left an indelible mark on this world. He was a scholar, teacher and researcher of the highest order of eminence. His research and other contributions exhibit an amazing depth and cover many diverse areas as sequential analysis, nonparametric methods, design of experiments and foundational issues. His depth of knowledge, thought provoking questions during seminars were always appreciated by all of us. His legacy will continue.

I really never understood the meaning of the age old proverb " STILL WATERS RUN DEEP"... till I was a student of Prof. Shoutir Kishore Chatterjee more popularly SKC to all students. I think this is all I can say. As far as my learning and guidance from him it is a perception which I find no adequate words to describe.. My deepest respects to Sir and sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

Professor Shoutir Kishore Chatterjee, or as we all used to call him, SKC sir, will always remain in our heart as one of the finest examples of a guru, a professor who always taught us the importance to find out on our own the overarching philosophy of a subject, why one should learn a theorem and things alike. His classes were an embodiment of the famous saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. In addition, as a student in the 1990-92 batch of MSc, I remember that we all used to feel proud to be part of a class where we were learning a topic, “the bivariate sign test”, invented by our professor. Sir is omnipresent in not only our statistical thoughts but also has a long term influence in the life choices which we make. With profound regret, I am trying to absorb the news of his sad demise.

I deeply mourn the loss of Professor S.K. Chatterjee with my fellow admirers who cherish his memory and contributions. Professor Chatterjee, our beloved SKC Sir, has left his mortal body for the Ramakrishna Loka. He was an ardent follower of the spiritualism of Sri Ramakrishna, Ma

Sarada, and Swami Vivekananda. Sir was much more than a teacher of statistics to me; he embodied the concept of simple living and deep thinking.

I am less fortunate than others who enriched their lives through their longer association with Sir. Unlike them, I was deprived of his influential guidance for my own actions. Soon after passing the M.Sc. exam, I left for the USA to pursue a Ph.D. Although I could have pursued my

Ph.D. under Sir’s guidance like many of my seniors and juniors, my precarious financial condition left me no alternative but to travel to the USA. When financial hardship threatened my path to the USA, it created uncertainty about my academic future. While my first preference was to go to the USA, there was a considerable chance that I might not be issued a visa. I was very disappointed and insecure about this development.

I approached Sir for his guidance and assistance. A true believer in commitment, Sir was very kind to listen to my awkward proposal. I sought his permission to be my Ph.D. advisor with the condition that if I obtained a visa, I would immediately abandon my research under his guidance and leave. Logically, no advisor would agree to such a strange request, and they might quickly denounce such a proposal. Sir, being the most sought-after Ph.D. advisor, had no reason to agree to my pleading. But Sir was a deeply sympathetic soul. He knew the importance of a career opportunity for me in the USA. All my professors and seniors were in disbelief when I told them that Sir kindly agreed to my unusual proposal. Alas, within a couple of months, I left for the USA, sacrificing my golden opportunity to be molded by Sir.

Great souls like Sir are not easily found. I am fortunate that my life has been touched by many of them. To our deep sadness, within a few years, we lost three such great personalities: Professor J.K. Ghosh, Professor P.K. Sen, and Professor S.K. Chatterjee, who were scholars and humanists in the truest meanings of these words. They were the crown jewels of the Calcutta University Statistics Department. While I continue to miss them, I will always cherish their affectionate touch that immensely enriched me. All three of them were ardent devotees of Sri

Ramakrishna, and I pray these pure souls attain the Ramakrishna Loka.
