The Black Belt region was known for its rich, dark soil. This region includes 17 counties around the central part of Alabama, including Montgomery. 

Ness encounters Pinky at the Stockham plantation. The other woman and TimTam wanted Pinky to speak. Ness, either out of lack of care or of empathy, did not care if Pinky spoke. Ness did not judge Pinky, like a mother figure.

This shows that being a black woman, was still in many ways, more difficult then being a black man. (Although I would not know for sure because I am not in that position myself. The villagers were distant and did not know much about white people. This made them fearful of what white people have done to them in the past. Akua was not distant from white people. She grew up with them and understood they all did not mean harm upon the tribes. Akua was not fearful. 

The quote above summarizes the fear the villager have that lead them to kill the white man.
