For Robert it was easy to find work but for Willie her story was not the same. After three months Willie finally finds a job working as a house maid for a wealthy black family. Willies lack of ability to find a job is important because it shows what racial boundaries are being put in place in harlem dispite the promise of change.

Stanford University. Here, Marcus was at a function with his friends where his thoughts wandered to his ancestors, bringing him his continued fear of water. Even at a pool, surrounded by his friends in a safe environment, Marcus thinks of his ancestors who were put on ships to be slaves and went through the horror that so many do not understand, or can even think of. Marcus reflects on his family's past through his experience with the water.

He then got put in shackles and shipped down to Pratt City to work in the coal mines as labor for the jails. In the mines, H experienced injustice and horror as pit bosses hit workers until death. Sexual abuse is also areason "Maame" fled Effia's home village. This shows that being a black woman, was still in many ways, more difficult then being a black man.

For the slaves that didn't make it to the new world, the castle was the last place they ever saw on land. Up to 1,000 males and 500 females were crammed and shackled in the castles dank. There were dreadful conditions in the dank, the floor was covered in human waste, very little light, no space to lie down, etc. And once the slaves stepped foot in the castle, they could spend up to 3 months held captave in these conditions.
