Summary:
Since before World War II a lot of the Japanese soldiers would capture and rape women. These women were known to the Japanese soldiers as comfort women.  This is an issue that has been in a sense brushed under the rug by Japan. It has even gone as far as damaging South Korea and Japan’s relationship, which in turn can affect the United States with both of them being our allies. An activist group has taken an ear to this issue and tried to bring it to light by building a statue in San Francisco of three women from China, Korea and Japan holding hands to symbolize their unity. This has raised some issues which has led to the mayor of the Japanese city of Osaka stating that he is dismissing any relations his city has with San Francisco. This is the first time there has been a comfort woman statue in any major city and is considered to be a big milestone for this group of women.  I believe that this is an issue that should be brought to light and help make people more aware of how many women were actually affected by this.
