Women rights were enshrined to ensure that women are entitled to all of these rights. However, there are still countries around the world, where women and girls are not treated the way they
should be, often simply because of their gender. The aim of this right is about more than giving opportunities to women or girls, its mainly aim is to change how countries and communities work by changing laws and policies.

Poland has one of the most restrictive abortions laws in the whole Europe, as the abortion could legally take place only when there is a risk to the health of the mother, or if the pregnancy is resulted from rape or incest. This means that a girl who might be raped by her own father, will have no other choice than giving birth. As well as woman at high risk of dying in childbirth or carrying a dead baby will not be able to seek a termination.

At the beginning of September this year, the Polish parliament had a debate when they come up with new legislation which, if passed, would usher in an almost complete ban on abortion. The new changes won't only ban women and girls to have abortion, but
also increase the maximum jail term for anyone who assists or encourages them have an abortion from three to five years.

“If I have a 32-week pregnant patient with pre-eclampsia, I have to wait for her and her child to start dying before I can take action,” explained Professor Romuald Dębski during a debate “If there is an ectopic pregnancy and bleeding, I can perform a termination. But if there is no bleeding - no immediate risk to life - I have to wait until she starts dying.” Even though, the women is put under a lot of risk, the doctors wouldn't be able to do anything as it would be against the law and they would put themselves under the risk of going to jail.

On the 3rd of October 2016, polish women took the streets of the capital city, Warsaw in a pro-choice march on what they called "Black Monday". All of the women wore black as a sign of mourning for their reproductive rights. Thousands of people decided to join the march, also women received a lot of help from men, as they cooked soups and served sandwiches during the day. Also the French actress Juliette Binoche tweeted her support for the protest during a visit to Krakow.

However, the protest did not make positive impact, as the parliament is still working on the legislation. If the changes actually take place, women will put under a lot of pressure, as they will be the ones to decide if they want to terminate a pregnancy and go jail or continue with the pregnancy and risk their lives. Polish women are really frustrated as they believe they should be the one to make decision about their bodies and health, in consultations with their doctors, and not by politicians.
