Types of Fire Detection and Suppression Systems

Fire detection systems are a critical element of any building design. For high-rise buildings and multi-winged structures such as hospitals and hotels, these designs can become complex. Electrical contractors and end user customers frequently enlist the expert services of NICET certified designers from reputable fire alarm companies to integrate an efficient and effective fire detection and alarm system. These fire alarm designers will design a code compliant system using the latest CAD (computer-assisted design) technology. With this design reproduction, experts are able to determine precisely the types and number of detectors and alarms, fire suppression monitoring, and evacuation routes necessary to deliver the highest level of security for the occupants. The design should meet or exceed all elements of NFPA and local code requirements to ensure maximum safety.

Fire Alarm Control Panels

Notifier by Honeywell, is a global leader in fire detection and alarm devices. Their line includes fire alarm control panels with one way or two way voice, addressable and conventional controls. The equipment is designed with ultra-sensitive smoke detection and digital voice command evacuation systems. These panels can be used in a smaller building up to extensive and more complex networks for larger, high-rise buildings or multiple buildings in a campus configuration.

Initiating Devices

Fire alarm pull stations, waterflow monitors, and sensor-activated detectors initiate devices that activate an alarm conditions. Traditional fire alarms were manually activated while today’s technology allows for automatic sensing elements to activate the alarm, minimizing false alarms. These more sophisticated smart devices are more common in modern buildings and have saved many lives.

Notification Devices

Notification equipment utilize sensory methods to alert occupants to a potential emergency. These devices include standardized audible alarms and visual alerts that include flashing lights plus voice messages that direct occupants to evacuate safely. Certain audible textual tones are included in EVAC, Emergency Voice Alarm Communications. These employ highly reliable speakers, properly situated, to alert all occupants of an emergency. These are managed from a central Command and Control Center to direct occupants away from the danger and to the closest route to evacuation. These can operate on recorded or real-time voice overrides.

Briefly explain the company background and business of the company.

The Port of Beirut is the main port in Lebanon on the eastern part of the Saint George Bay on Beirut's northern Mediterranean coast, west of the Beirut River. It is one of the largest and busiest ports on the Eastern Mediterranean.

Historical Background is the name of Beirut Port has been mentioned since the fifteenth century BC in the mutual letters of the Pharaohs and the Phoenicians, and during the Roman Era, it was developed into a commercial and economic centre. During the Omayyad Era, the Port of Beirut became the centre for the First Arabic Fleet. As for the Crusaders Era, the Port of Beirut had an important role in the maritime trade between East and West. This role had been fortified during the Mameluke Era when it was turned into a commercial centre visited by pilgrims of the Holy Lands. By the end of the 19th century, the current Port of Beirut had been founded.

The Port of Beirut lies within a longitude of 35 57' E and a latitude of 35 15'N, forming the midpoint of three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa that makes the Port a passage for ship fleets between East and West. During the mid 70's, the Port of Beirut was an important international trading station with the surrounding Arab countries and up until today it has preserved its commercial nature.

These casualties have significantly overwhelmed the health system that was already reeling from a socio-economic crisis and the on-going COVID pandemic. Furthermore, the Minister of Public Health (MOPH) central warehouse where WHO supported essential medical supplies were stored has been severely damaged, necessitating immediate relocation to a different site. Moreover, a recently delivered shipment of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), stored at the Beirut port warehouse, pending transfer to MOPH warehouse, was completely destroyed, leaving the nation in need of urgent trauma and PPE supplies.

a) The cause of explosion happened.

The cause of the explosion is Ammonium Nitrate. This is because the large amount of ammonium nitrate stored is considered a major fire hazard. Thus, many cases are reported worldwide as a result of ammonium nitrate. Large stock of ammonium nitrate are likely to explode in two ways. First, the storage mean’s in contract with explosive mixtures or sources of external energy. Second, the explosion can occur as a result of fire entering the ammonium nitrate due to the heat generated by the large-scale oxidation.

b) Impact of the explosion

The Lebanese authorities say that the explosion, which killed at least 220 peoples, injured more than 5,000 and left an estimated 300,000 people homeless was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound commonly used as an agriculture fertilizer, which had been stored for 6 years at a port warehouse.

c) Proposed emergency action plan

Provide a safe area to gather and not be affected by the danger.

Provides a suitable place for chemicals or explosive.

Provide a nearby treatment center so that treatment can be done immediately.

Immediately report to all residents about the things that will happen so that they know the current situation in the area.

d) Training needed to be given for the workers, residential and commercial industries.

Described how to use a fire extinguisher.

Employer need to teach the employees on how to evacuate the building properly.

Employer should teach the employee about how to handle the fire and proper way to use suitable outfit while working.

In conclusion, what i can learn from this assignment is how important to train the employee, residential and industries because it may help the residential, workers and industrial to overcome when they in danger. One of the most important things is, they should know how to use the Fire Extinguisher and avoid from simply use it. Besides, i can learn how to evacuate the building properly. It important because if you can’t evacuate the building properly, it may cause the fire spread and become worse.

Secondly, i able to know the types of Fire detection and suppression systems in more detail and we can learn how it work. As we know, there are three types of fire detection and suppression systems which is, The fire alarm control panels, the initiating devices and the notification devices.

Third, we can know what is the cause of explosion happened. Based on the discussion, the explosion happened because of the large amount of ammonium nitrate stored is considered a major fire hazard. Thus, many cases are reported worldwide as a result of ammonium nitrate. Large stock of ammonium nitrate are likely to explode in two ways. What make it worst, is the impact of explosion which killed at least 220 peoples, injured more than 5,000 and left an estimated 300,000 people homeless was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound commonly used as an agriculture fertilizer, which had been stored for 6 years at a port warehouse.

Last but not least, we can know the proposed of emergency action plans. There are four proposed of emergency action plan which is, Provide a safe area to gather and not be affected by the danger, Provides a suitable place for chemicals or explosive, Provide a nearby treatment centre so that treatment can be done immediately and immediately report to all residents about the things that will happen so that they know the current situation in the area.
