According to "School Discipline & Students with Disabilities", a “disciplinary change of placement” is when the school decides that a "student with a disability is subject to 10 consecutive days of disciplinary removal or 10 cumulative days of removal, if the student's behavior is substantially similar to their behavior that caused previous removals."

Sometimes a student would need to have a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) completed to assess a student's behavior and how it relates to his or her disability.

Some students may have a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) based on the findings of the FBA. It is important for the special education teacher to find positive interventions, supports, and strategies that address the behavior to allow for the student to succeed.
