Review by Mr Issac Pang

I selected this book for a leisure read as I wanted to find out if it's different from the movie version (starring the late great Robin Williams). The book explores deep themes such as living a fulfilling life and personal redemption. So far, the book is living up to my expectations as it is so much richer compared to the movie. Don't get me wrong - Robin Williams is a FANTASTIC actor. However, the book explores a lot of mini stories that the movie couldn't afford to. If it did, the movie would have been 5 hours long! Although I think I know how the book is going to end (as I have seen the movie), I have a feeling that there will be some twists in the story.

My favourite sentence in the story is uttered by the main character as he laments about his regrets in life - "Failures plagued me. Things I had omitted or ignored, neglected. What I should have given and hadn’t. I felt the biting pang of every unfulfillment".

The young adult novel was released in 2014 and tells of the final exploits of the seven demigods of the Prophecy of Seven in their quest to defeat Gaea, the Earth Mother.

1) I chose this book as it teaches me about the roman and greek mythology .

I chose the book Wonder by RJ Palacio.
Wonder is one of my favourite books so I have read it multiple times. Wonder is about a boy with craniofacial abnormalities, which basically means that he does not look normal. The story is about how he "survives" his first year of school. With its ups and downs, the year is interesting for August Pullman, the main character. I really liked the storyline and enjoyed reading the book. It was funny and captivating. It definitely lived up to my expectations and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested.
Since I have already read the book, I am not going to spoil the ending. However, when I was reading the book for the first time, I thought the book would end on a normal note, with August and his friends enjoying their graduation. Turns out, a lot more happens.
A new word I learnt is "verbosity". Verbosity is the fact or quality of using more words than needed.

The book I am reading is called Our Castle By The Sea and it is written by Lucy Strange.
This book is about Petra, her sister Mags, her father and her mother. It takes place during the early 1900s when WW2 was starting. The family live in a 'Castle' which is actually a lighthouse. But the house holds a dark secret. 4 boulders surround the house and faint singing can be heard at night, apart from strange occurrences.
I like this book as it gives me a sense of curiosity to read more. The plot twists are very interesting. The book has certainly lived up to my expectations. I think that at the end, Petra would find out how to put a stop to the strange things and their lives will return back to normal.
I learnt the word '' incessant ''

Maze Runner by James Dashner

Book Review by Radha Master
I decided to select this book as I have always been a fan of books encircling a post-apocalyptic plot.
The book is about a 15/16 year old boy called Thomas. One day he wakes up in a large metal box , memories fully wiped, having no idea where he was or where he came from. The only thing he remembered was his name ' Thomas. Suddenly the Box stops and opens , and a boy introduces him to his new home : The Glade.
Alby, the Leader, says every month a Greanie gets sent by THEM. The people who locked the boys [there were around say 50 boys(give or take) ; no girls]in the Glade which was surrounded by a Maze they have been trying to solve for 2 years . But after Thomas' appearance, one thing was clear:
Everything was going to change
I am currently on Chapter 25 for this book, and it is simply AMAZING. The way James Dashner presents and describes the characters , the plot, leaves me begging for more. I feel as though I am with them in the Glade , be it struggling to escape or facing the Grievers. I feel like the characters whom I like are my friends that I've known for years on end [ although this statement does not really say much because I am BFF's with literally every book character I like]
But what I really like about this book is that the plot is constantly changing and evolving. For example, one could be reading a line and know exactly what comes next, but the plot of this book constantly surprises and, well, changes, so you really can't tell from the previous line whether the outcome of a particular action is good or bad. And because of this , when reading this book, I am constantly on the edge of my seat, gripping the armrests until my knuckles turn white. From the long description I am quite sure that you can tell THIS BOOK IS MOST CERTAINLY LIVING UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS. Just on a sidenote, my favourite characters will have to be Newt and Minho. I would say Teresa but I have a feeling she will backstab everyone.
I predict that in the end, they will escape from the glade and the Maze. I have a strong feeling [though one should never trust their feelings ] that WICKED will do further experimenting on them and trick them into thinking that are good. I think WICKED has good intentions, but wiping out an entire generation just to find a cure to the Flare sounds a little extreme to me.
You should read the book.
Oh and a new word that I learnt is "proxyms"

As a result, they are able to both host gods and wield magic. The duo unknowingly hosts the Egyptian gods Horus and Isis(not the terrorists), while their father is taken as a host by Orisis who is captured by Set.
Robin Williams).

The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

By Paavni Singhal
I chose the book " Mark of Athena" by Rick Riordan. I chose this book because I am undoubtedly a major fan of the Percy Jackson series. "The Mark of Athena'' is the third book in the Heroes of Olympus series. As I was already reading this series (for the first time) I chose this book.
This book is most definitely living up to my expectations. I have only read approximately a hundred and thirty pages, but I have loved every minute of it. Rick Riordan has so marvellously and successfully depicted the scenario and I can clearly picture the ongoings. The book is thrilling and unpredictable. It is about the seven demigods, Percy Jackson, Jason Grace, Piper McLean, Leo Valdez, Hazel Levesque, Frank Zhang and Annabeth Chase going on a dangerous quest of the Great Prophecy to save the world from the wrath of Gaia, the earth goddess. Though their various captivating adventures, I have found the mere first 100 pages 'unputdownable' as I spend all my free time reading now.
I predict that they will get closer to fulfilling the Great Prophecy of the seven demigods but also at the same time fulfil the prophecy of the Mark of Athena. However, knowing the way Rick Riordan writes, I highly doubt that this book will be, in any way, normal.
Through this book, I have better understood the meaning of 'obliged' which means morally inclined to do something.
I would definitely recommend this fantastic book and series to anyone who is interested!

by Luciano
I choose this book because my mother suggested it to me as she said it is a good book.

It lived up to my expectations because it was a very interesting book with a lot of interesting details in it.

Since the book was extremely interesting I managed to read the entire thing in two days so I already know what the ending was.

A new phrase that I have learnt is 'we had a real pig of a day'. It means that you had a really horrible day.

The book is about an autistic teenager who lived with his father because his mother was dead.

Then one day, one of his neighbour's dog got killed with a garden fork.He then started looking for clues for who killed the dog and wrote a book about it. His father found out about the book and hid it somewhere.

After finding the book in his father's room, he also found many of letters that were addressed to him. After reading some of them, he realised that they were from his mother who was not dead. When his father found out that he had read the letters, he explained that he had lied about his mother dying and that he had killed his neighbour's dog because the neighbour's husband had sex with her and he wanted to make the neighbour angry.

When he heard that he got scared that his father might kill him too and decided to go to London and live with his mother. He knew where his mother lived because of the address the letters where sent from.

So he took some food, his pet rat and his father's credit card and took the train to london.

After arriving in London, he went to his mother. After living with his mother for a few days, he and his mother went back to his old home.

Soon after that, his father left him and his mother. But not before giving him a dog.

Another thing that I like about this book is that it is written in a style called "stream of consciousness". This means that you can read what the author thinks, feels and says. It think that that is very interesting.

I am in the middle of reading this right now, I think so far it is a really exciting book. The name of the book is Alex Rider Never Say Die and the author is Anthony Horowitz. I selected this book because I wanted to try something new and this book felt very action packed and full of adrenaline.Yes, it is living up to my expectations. So far it has been very exciting , Alex the main character of the book, he thought he had seen his best friend die in front of his own eyes but then gets a message and he has a second thought that she still might be alive determined, he investigates further until he is so desperate he flies to Egypt where he saw on video tape what had happened Jack Starbright his best friend with closer look he notices something....... I do not want to spoil it but here is just a bit of it. To me it is very action pack and it is full of adventure. I think its going to end end by Alex almost getting killed trying to save Jack . Some words and phrases i have learnt are snapped, considered the possibility, his face streaked with red, both his eyes seemed to be missing and his eyes were angrier than ever. these are just some of them . I would love to read the rest of the series. -Zosia

Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham

this is written by Paavni.
I chose the book Talking as Fast as I can by Lauren Graham and yes, it does fall under the nonfiction genre. I searched through the app, looking desperately for something nonfiction and interesting. With a stroke of luck, I found this book.
I chose this book, subtitled "From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls" because the show "Gilmore Girls" has been and always will be one if my favourite television shows. Lauren Graham was one of the starring characters in the show, so this book was about everything that went on behind the scenes, but also subconsciously was and autobiography by Lauren Graham, who plays "Lorelai Gilmore". I thought autobiographies were boring and hundreds of pages of unwanted bragging, but Lauren Graham has definitely proved me wrong. I really wanted to see what Lauren had to say about the journey.
I have only had the pleasure of a few chapters so far but it has kept me enthralled and engrossed in the storyline. Lauren Graham has a very unique style of writing (and acting, I must say). She has the brilliant ability to involve humour in what would have been something boring. It kept me in stitches. She had these amazing point of views that just made me want to read on. So yes, this book is definitely living up to my high expectations.
I think the book is going to end with the thoughts of the production "Gilmore Girls, A Year in the Life", which is basically a revival of the original, Gilmore Girls.
I am enjoying reading about Lauren's journey as an actress and am looking forward to reading about the happenings behind the scenes of the show.
A word I learnt was "equity", which here means "the quality of being fair and impartial".

I choose this book because i had to choose a non-fiction book and i could not find any books that looks interesting so i just decided to choose this one.

No it is absolutely not living up to my expectations. It is a boring book that has a boring story, no plot, and no reason for me to read it other than the fact that i have to read a book and do a review on it. It is also not interesting because you already know what would happen at the end: Steve jobs would invent the iphone. That makes reading the book even more pointless. Why would you read about something you already know? It's useless. Unlike the book that i read last week.

As a result of this book being extremely boring,i did not learn any new words or phrases as i did not read enough of it to see any.

As i have mentioned earlier, the end of this book is very predictable. He will invent the Iphone.

I do not recommend this book to anyone. It is very boring and you would find yourself feeling very bored.

This is why i suggest you read some fictional books. In fictional books, the possibilities are endless. Anything can happen because it is not based of something that is real. This usually results in the book being interesting and you would find yourself reading the whole thing in one or two days. This is why i prefer fictional books to non-fiction books.

Blink by Malcom Gladwell (by Mr Chong)

I chose this book because I have read several other books by Malcolm Gladwell before and he always shares interesting ideas about how people think and how we can understand human thinking better. In this book, he continues to explore the very interesting ways in which our unconscious mind helps us to make very quick decisions that help us. These decisions are made so quickly, within a blink of an eye, that we often do not even know that these decisions are being made. He shared many interesting psychology experiments that were done to reveal how our quick judgements can be easily influenced. A new word and idea I learnt from his book is this word called “thin-slicing”. Thin-slicing refers to “our ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behaviour based on very narrow slices of experience.” For example, when we go to a doctor, we sense within the first 5 minutes whether the doctor genuinely cares for us or not. Even though we do not know the doctor well, we have already used “thin-slicing” to decide how to respond. It is an interesting book and it is living up to my expectations!

Book review by Radha Master
The book which I have chosen is a guide on how to master the art of debate.I have chosen this book as I thoroughly enjoy debating, whether competitively or not. I like non-fiction books, although considerably less than fiction, and this book certainly did not let me down. Although the foreword is slightly boring, reading the rest of the book is totally worth it! And best of all, this book is also catered towards beginners in debate, as the book explains the simple terms used such as " This House Believes That" . The book explains what debate is, how structure a good speech, how to make your speech sound strong and logical, how to form rebuttals, how to POI your opponent, how to respond to a POI, how to work together in a competition (impromptu or not), how to improve on strategy and style , how to coach your own debate team and even includes sample debate topics. The book is very informative and useful and I highly recommend it to people who want to improve on their public speaking skills. Overall a very nice book.
New word- admonishing

This book is probably one of the most exciting books that I have read. It is about this city , whom everyone is perfect , and those who are not are called : the flawed . These people are considered outcasts, disgraces and almost everyone hates them . They are constantly monitored by their whistle blowers , whom catch flawed people. One day , a girl , Celestine North , helps a flawed. That was a big mistake and she was then brought to the guild , a place to determine whether a person is flawed. Since her boyfriend’s father is the head of the guild , he tries to find a way to help Celestine , by telling her to lie , and say that the old man, whom she helped, pulled her towards him . But she did not lie , and that made him very angry , so he brands her as a flawed on all five places , and also on the spine. And since that is illegal, Celestine has to find the footage and stop him before this goes haywire. While she was on the run , her boyfriend’s father, Bosco , is wreaking havoc on the city . I very like this book because it. makes me want to turn to the next page as soon as I can . Celestine is also a very interesting character and she is quite smart. Whenever she devises a plan , the book doesn’t always tell us , and sometimes, the only one that knows about this plan is herself!I learned many new words from this book : undermine, psychotic , cockiness.
Book review by Chloe Heng

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

review by Paavni :)
I chose the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Last term, we got our Scholastic book order forms and whilst skimming through the pages, I came across this beautiful book.
I chose the book because the moment I saw the summary of the book, I knew I was going to love it. The basic storyline is that there is a new girl in Mica Area High School, whose name is Stargirl. Interesting name, is it not?
I have only had the pleasure of the first sixty pages or so but I am oblivious to the storyline of the book. Had it not been so interesting and undoubtedly unpredictable, because of the fact that there is no clear storyline at the moment, it would have been very monotonous. However, Stargirl, one of the main characters, is every bit eccentric, so should you ever read this amazing book, I think you would find yourself imagining what would Stargirl do next. She sings Happy Birthday to people she barely knows, she does the most unexpected of things, she dresses as if she is wearing her grandmother's clothes, and she is the friendliest of souls. Two more of the main characters, Leo and Kevin, study her carefully. This book brings out the true meaning of being yourself.
In case you have not noticed, this book is clearly living up to my expectations. I feel that sometimes, I can really to what I am reading. I think this book is going to end with a shocking realisation, for example the characters find out something absolutely baffling about Stargirl. Or, it could end completely differently, ending on a meaningful note or with a moral lesson. However, by seeing how unpredictable this novel is, I cannot predict anything with certainty in my voice.
Enthralled by this book, I have absent-mindedly forgotten to take note of a new word or phrase. Should I find one, I'll write it down.
I highly recommend this book to avid readers!

Book review by Radha Master
I chose the book Order of the Phoenix by J.K Rowling. As many of you know, I am obsessed with the H.P series (that is an understatement). So after 326 times of reading the series, I decided to pick up one of its books once more. Order of the Phoenix is the 5th book in the H.P series. In this book, everybody thinks that Harry is a liar and was proclaiming of seeing Voldemort only for attention (the Ministry Of Magic can be quite thick sometimes). And this is the book where they introduce the worst character I have ever had the displeasure to read about: Dolores Umbrige. She is hands down the WORST PERSON IN THIS MESSED UP WORLD. That blast-ended 🤬 just doesn't know when to keep her toad face out of things. She even called the centaurs ''filthy half-breeds''. WHO DOES THAT?! Anyway, this book is simply PHENOMENAL, just don't pay attention to that filthy toad of a person, Umbridge. Although this book withholds the introduction of Umbridge, it also contains the introduction of Luna Lovegood **cue standing ovation** . In this book you will be able to see how eccentric she really is. And as for the plot line, it is VERY well developed and is quite unpredictable. So after almost getting expelled from Hogwarts for performing underage magic in front of a muggle, Harry comes back to Hogwarts, only to realise that everyone thinks he is a lying scumbag. Whilst dealing with this torrent of anger and frustration, he is also seeing visions of killings and attacks related to Voldemort, wherein he is the attacker. Deaths slowly increasing, Harry gets worried. One night, he had a vision of Voldemort torturing Sirius in the department of mysteries... I do not want to spoil the book for people who have not already read this. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all ages (including u guys). I am sure you will fall in love with this book along with the rest of the series as I have .

review by Paavni, yet again :)
I chose the book Fish in a Tree. I came across this book last term when I looked through the Scholastic book order form. There is no evident storyline at the moment, as I have only had the pleasure of 3 chapters. Or, at least, I have not detected one. Despite this fact, the book is amazing and captivating. This is similar to my other review, featuring the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Basically, by what I have read so far, the main character, Ally Nickerson, is dyslexic. I have been awaiting this book on Libby for weeks now. Back to the point, Ally finds it back-breaking to decipher the pages of words that lie before her. However, she has not admitted this to anyone. Even her teachers think all she does is fool around in class. She has a remarkable talent for drawing and doodles endlessly. I felt bad for her as some of the teachers were actually harsh to her. An example was when she gave a sympathy card to her teacher, which is a card you give to one when someone passes on, when she was having a baby. This book is very engaging in that way, because it is so unpredictable and you never know what she will do next.
This book is clearly living up to my expectations and I hope to read more such books in the foreseeable future. I like the author's style of writing tremendously. I think she as presented the events in the book very successfully.
I think this book is going to end with everyone discovering that Ally fails to read. However, I can never be sure.
I have forgotten to take note of a new word or phrase. I'm definitely not forgetful :). I will post one once I come across one.
This book is very good and I highly recommend it!

A review by Paavni :)
This week, I chose the book Danny the Champion of the World by the infamous Roald Dahl. You may think I am a little too old to be reading his books now, but I can assure you, nobody is ever too old to read Roald Dahl's amazing books.
I came across this book late last year, which was quite a while ago. There was a small library where I was, with only one "children's" book, this one. I loved it so much that I decided to pick it up again recently.
The book has an enthralling yet simple storyline; Danny is a young boy with only a father. One night, he discovers his father has not arrived home and it is late at night, so he is worried. A half hour later, his father arrives and tells him where he was- he had been poaching in a pheasant farm! After this, he continues poaching, until one day Danny had the most brilliant idea. The pheasants were roosting that night, the unscrupulous Mr Hazell was putting on a grand show to display them the next day. Nobody ever dreamt of poaching that night, but of course Danny and his father come up with a plan- a brilliant one! I shall not spoil the rest.
This book has definitely been living up to my expectations so far. I liked how Roald Dahl crafted a storyline that was interesting, yet straightforward. I like how his use of vocabulary was very wide-ranged. It has been a very enjoyable book so far, but Roald Dahl's books undoubtedly always are.
I have yet to finish the book, but I predict that they will pull off their plan successfully, leaving Mr Hazell dumbfounded. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested!
