What is a star?

A star is primarily made up of hydrogen and helium. Stars don't have a solid surface. Stars are made up of many different layers starting with the Core (the area of which nuclear fusion occurs), then the Radiation Zone (a region of very tightly packed gas where energy is transferred mainly in the form of electromagnetic radiation). After this is the Convection Zone which is the outer most layer of the star's interior. Then getting to the outer most layers comes the photosphere where light is generated, when you look at a a star you see the photosphere. Then comes the chromosphere which gives the color of the star. Finally the outer most layer is the Corona, the Corona is a white halo only seen during solar eclipses. The Corona gradually thins into streams of electrically charged particles called solar winds.
