The 10th Mountain division were deployed during the invasion of Italy. Germany already had 3 different units specializing in mountain warfare. So, to combat this the 10th Mountain Division was created. Their purpose was to both combat the German mountain units and destroy the many German mountain defenses and support allied ground troops. Majority of their battles served to clear the way for the 5th army's advance.

The nickname for the division was "Mountaineers". This nickname comes from the fact that they spent almost the entire war fighting in the Italian mountains.

Their motto was "Climb to Glory" . The significance of this motto was discovered when a group of soldiers hiked up into Mount Belvedere and found a large rock that had the engravings of killed soldiers inscribed in it.
