I would imagine that they would be feeling extremely happy to be set free, but overwhelmed and unsure what they could do to make a life for themselves. They likely had very little education and no capital for them to build their life upon, so I think they would try to move to a city or town with more job opportunities so they could support their family. Challenges they would face could include finding well paid work, facing intense racism and discrimination, assimilating to the dominant culture and providing for their children.

I think that an enslaved person would feel outright joy. They now have freedom, something that they have been craving for their whole life. However, as soon as the relief and joy passed, I think they would become a little worried as to what to do next. However, I think that the joy of being free would outweigh the confusion.

An enslaved person might finally feel free. They would no longer be forced to do something they did not want to do. They would probably first find a place where they would not be caught and then find a way to get their necessities (money, food, water). The challenges they might face are racism, difficulty finding a job to get money, and still trying to hide from slave catchers.

They will face a lot of racism and a lot of disrespect. The issue is that while slavery was abolished, there still was segregation and tons of racism. The institution of slavery was taken away, but not the society that was bred out of it.

They would be happy because they are not at the whims of any person anymore, but they have to figure out how to make it on their own. With the prejudice against African-American's after they were free, they have multiple choices. The most important thing is finding jobs or going to school (adult or child).

I think an enslaved person that was just set free would be extremely frightened. Slaves, albeit in a horrific manner, had a roof over their heads and land to sort of... occupy. Now, they have no home, no job, and a family of mouths to feed. They will probably head north to find a job and purchase some land. It's possible that some might even stay down South working as laborers. In such an upheaval, with so many people roaming the country, it's a mad rush to find a place you can call home. African-Americans still experienced discrimination beyond belief, and didn't get the federal assistance they needed to integrate into society.

I think a newly freed enslaved person would feel elated. As slaves, they had no time to really discover who they were; at worst, they weren't treated as humans. As free people, though they have to provide for themselves, they would be shackled and in service of no one. I think some challenges they might face would be finding equal opportunities in work, housing, and pay; as the article Nicole Hannah Jones wrote, they started out with virtually zero capital. This, along with the lack of education would hinder their assimilation into free society.
