Chinese culture and practices are mostly centered on the basis of wealth and fortune. This made many citizens and people of China strive to live lavish lives and the projected view of what a “perfect” Chinese life would look like.

Chinese culture forced O-lan to be obedient to a husband that did not love her or respect her. Wang Lung was obsessed about what other men thought of him and strived to be the best farmer and wealthiest man in his community. The first son became greedy because Wang Lung treated all his sons more special than his daughters. His second son inherited his need to save money in order to survive and continue to provide for his family, which was the role of men in Chinese culture. The third son was overlooked this becoming silent and unwanted but eventually disobeyed his father. The second girl had to be married off to protect her purity, which was very important in Chinese culture, while the other was also overlooked.
