In "Let Her Go" by Passenger, sententia is used to tell the listener to appreciate who they have while they still have them. One of the lines say: "you only hate the road when you're missing home." When you are at home, you don't realize how special it is. You miss it because you don't have it anymore, and the composer uses that line and compares it to how you take a person for granted which is why you miss them when they are gone.

This use of sententia appeals to ethos. Using sententia makes the performer sound wise and knowledgable of this type of situation so we trust them. When we hear it, we understand it as well because of the senentia used to compare it to things we would understand.

Having too much of a good thing can also be bad, and the Tao Te Ching uses sententia to get that message across in this example. Ching appeals to the logos with this device. It is logical to not want to "spill" whatever you're filling a bowl with, so he compares that to how you should not overdo things because they could end bad as well.

In this example, Abraham Lincoln uses sententia to resolve a debate in the government. He uses it to say that the government can not survive if they are arguing with each other. This appeals to logos. It appeals to logos because it makes sense that a force cannot "stand" if its internal workings are not compatible with eachother.
