The overarching theme is that Public Health should be all-inclusive, not only in whom it helps, but the areas in which it focuses. Think of it as a puzzle, where the puzzle pieces are the different divisions of Public Health such as environmental health, mental health, Epidemiology, and so on. But for the public, it is a discipline that has emerged to promote and protect human health. Like the smallpox vaccine, before the smallpox vaccine was developed, there were severe outbreaks of infectious diseases caused by the smallpox virus. However, after the vaccine was developed, smallpox was not quickly under control until 1959, when the WHO launched a campaign to eradicate it (CDC, 2016). That's the role that public health has to play. It protects people's health through awareness, monitoring, prevention, and treatment of major diseases. Besides, public health is not limited to the prevention of diseases; for people's dietary health, mental health, health education, knowledge propaganda, and so on, all belong to public health. Public health is reflected in every aspect of people's daily lives. The development of public health has brought the world closer together and given scholars from different disciplines more opportunities to learn, share, and contribute their experiences together.

To me, Public Health is cooperation within communities to address health problems. It's an agreement that we all deserve the right to healthy choices and lives, and that we should use scientific methods to find and implement programs that support that right. 
At this time, two major components of Public Health are especially visible: awareness and adaptability. As we've seen, it's important that accurate information is widely circulated and that our places of work, education, and entertainment find ways to adapt when necessary. 
Public Health also reflects cultural attitudes. Attached is a poster from the National Library of Medicine warning about the risk of STDs, but using an outdated model that is trying to use shame to illustrate a point. The other, a more recent poster from the Louisiana Dept. of Health., seeks to normalize STD testing and is illustrating their point through education.

When I think of public health, the first thing that comes to mind is equity. In our medical system, often those who can afford it benefit from certain services, while those who may need it most but can't afford it, tend to suffer. To me, public health addresses those differences that the medical system fails to recognize. Public health is aimed at giving everyone an equal opportunity at good health. Whether it be through nutrition programs at lower income schools or STD education and vaccine initiatives, all public health is geared towards prevention. People lose their beloved ones because of the deficiencies in the system.Besides, to me, public health means tracking the effect of common diseases on people’s life. For example, we all can see how we become isolated these days because of the spread of COVID-19. This quarantine time undoubtedly affects people’s mental health and work efficiency. Public health scientists consider these outbreaks and evaluate their effects. For example, in the case of the COVID-19 pandemic the goal of public health is to educate about the purpose of face coverings, attempt to provide equitable access to prevention resources, low/no-cost testing, access to health insurance, and more. Public health also has the responsibility to research the disparities in the spread of disease and why certain populations or individuals are more at risk of poor health outcomes.

To me, the beauty of this field is that it covers a vast number of topics, ranging from the promotion of physical activity to raising awareness on the health risks brought on by climate change. What has happened in the last few months has made it clear that racism is a public health crisis that needs to be promptly addressed.

Though that's not a very fun answer.

Health crises, big or small, pose an existential threat to society as we know it. This is evident now more than ever with COVID-19. Sometimes these challenges can seem insurmountable, given their widespread reach and potentially deadly consequences --- despite that, healthcare and public health officials continue on, bearing the torch in the dark unknown. It is truly inspiring to see folks from all walks of life work together to protect not only themselves, but their family, their neighbors, and their community. In my eyes, public health is the conscious effort to protect those around you regardless of the challenges ahead. 

Sort of a silly video to share, but I can't help but think of the "never give up!" fisherman when I think about overcoming tough challenges. These communities can be large or small, and the people in these communities can be from various backgrounds (different ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, genders, etc.). The overarching theme is that Public Health should be all-inclusive, not only in whom it helps, but the areas in which it focuses. Think of it as a puzzle, where the puzzle pieces are the different divisions of Public Health such as environmental health, mental health, Epidemiology, and so on. Without all of these pieces fitting together, you cannot effectively protect the health of an entire population.

I worked within a wellness center at NAYA and naturopath clinic that I was able to get out and become a part of the community and help build blocks to an overall healthier community.
