Desmond Symbol 2 One important symbol in The Great Trouble is the color Blue. This symbol represents Death because of the blue death or Cholera. Although the water is not blue. For example, In most areas water means life but in this book, water means death because Cholera is a water-born illness. One quote that demonstrates the significance of this symbol is, “ I can’t help I’m just a mudlark’” (Deborah Hopkinson, #116). As this quote suggests, Eel is feeling discouraged and is not thinking his help is helpful. The symbol blue is crucial to the book because of water and the Blue Death because people think it is an airborne illness so they are drinking the water. People are not listening and dying because they were drinking the water. Many people are dying from it every day. Finally, people listened and stopped drinking from the pump. That is why it is a very important symbol.

Symbol 1
One important symbol in The Great Trouble is the Broad Street Water Pump.

This symbol represents death because everybody in the town believes that this terrible disease comes from the bad air, although Dr. Snow believes something else… he believes that it comes from the Broad Street water pump. Doctor Snow said,” In short, my belief is that cholera is spread by water,” After he and Eel do research, they figure out that it does come from the water pump. It came from a cesspool. A baby was sick with diarrhea, and so when the mom threw the cesspool waste outside, the excretions seeped into the ground. It then went to the water pump on Broad Street, and people started to drink out of it- like usual. Then when people got sick, the blue death included dehydration. So, people would get water from the Broad Street pump to keep them nice and cool, when really, that would finish them off. That is why the Broad Street Water Pump is very important in this book. It is a killer.

SUMMARY
The book The Great Trouble is about a young boy named Eel in London in 1855. He lost his parents at a young age and he tries to keep his only relationship to the family alive, his brother. He has to pay 4 shillings a week to keep him safe from the most wretched man in London; Fisheye Bill Tyler. While he is working as a mudlark to earn money, the blue death strikes. He works with a doctor to figure it out. Most people believe it comes from the air, but Dr. Snow said,’In short, my belief is that cholera is spread by water,” ( Deborah Hopkinson.) Eel has to figure out the cause and then stop it before the whole town is gone…

Theme 2

Another important theme is how science always perseveres (over suspicion and rumors?) Perseverance

This theme is shown when Dr. Snow gives broad street a chance when everyone else on up broad street gives up thinking that they are all going to die. But Dr. Snow thought of an idea that could help broad streets, and he would save thousands of lives. It is also made clear when he said to all that ‘I can't do anything for your friend, once someone has cholera, there is little we can do. We don't yet know enough to stop the course of the disease. I can only hope to save those who have not fallen ill.” pg.113- Deborah Hopkinson. That shows how much he is taking this seriously and how much he wants to get rid of this. He shows that once you get it, you can not do much, but if you don't have it, Dr. Snow will spread the word to not to drink from the Broad Street Water Pump. And he goes on with Eels help to prove that his idea is right. Without thinking it through and without perseverance, he probably would not have gone up to see if the cholera epidemic was from water, the idea he was thinking about. He thought that bad epidemics came from water. So when Eel cam, he could have said to himself, it is no big deal and it is not from water. Maybe the next one. Plus, he had many appointments everyday and he was never bored, he was never home! But he got up and did research, with Eel, and that perseverance saved hundreds if not thousands of people.
