I understand the application of these legal and ethical standards regarding the RTI process to be protective safe guards for students. It is easy for educators to get busy and unintentionally allow a student to "fall through the cracks." It is essential for these standards to be in place in order to promote success for all students. I also have a personal connect to these legal and ethical standards involving the RTI process. As a 504 student, I directly benefited from teachers identifying my strengths/weaknesses and developing an appropriate plan to enhance my educational experience. I feel grateful that I was provided the opportunity to progress though my educational journey with these processes in place. As a school counselor I am committed to identifying needs and serving students in order to continue the cycle of intervention and monitoring to pass along the privilege of education to others.

Response to Intervention has become particularly important because Special Education laws have been put in to place to ensure students receive timely and effective evaluations and parent feedback regarding student identification processes. In order to meet state and federal guidelines, schools should adopt three best practices. Mrs. Mendez recommends,
1. Adopt a timeline and flowchart for how a referral in handled when a parent makes a request for special education testing.
2. Ensure that each person involved in the process is educated and trained in the process.
3. Establish a system of checks and balances to ensure accountability in the identification process, so that students do not "fall between the cracks."
An emerging issue in the RTI process is the lack of diagnosticians. With rising numbers of identified students due to school closures, school diagnosticians are stretched thin. Mrs. Mendez expects there to be incentives for schools to be able to hire additional staff or contract with other organizations to complete diagnostic testing for students.
The person I interviewed is Laura Mendez (Pecan Trail Intermediate School, Counselor).

The role of the school counselor is my professional perspective. The audience of this padlet will be school counselors serving in intermediate schools. The topic I chose is a legal guide to Response to Intervention (RTI). The reason I chose this topic is to educate the intermediate counselors on legal processes of RTI. Elementary campus typically have very structured RTI procedures in place. However, intermediate campuses are typically a little behind the curve in terms of monitoring student success and intervening when needed. Now that we are feeling the impacts of COVID and school closures, the RTI process has become even more critical than ever before as educators implement intervention procedures and processes.
