My initial idea is defined by trying to the capture the historical and psychological aspect of this micro culture, that relatively captures  a very small population of people. Apart from looking into folklore, myth, history and very famous Balkan anecdotes, I looked into art as well. The famous motif found in all of them is the visual representation of a devil, or varies different version of this infamous creature . Now,  the devil here, has very metaphorical meaning, referring to various sins of the modern age. One of them being war. Rustic and pristine way of life in Montenegro ruined by five different wars only in the 20th century has brought pain, despair, poverty and destruction not only to the uncorrupted and untainted mountainous land, but to the people as well. These painting depict most of its essence, and describe the situation way to well. The decapitation of civilization all around the world can be recognized in this painting as well. A perversion of the human form initiated by sins, greed and war is a very famous subject in Europe during the 20th century as well.

A rather abstract, assertive,  active, aggressive way of painting his work. Portraying historical events, landscape of the Balkans, even fruit very dominant to the Adriatic and as well as the Mediterranean ocean, Lubarda depicts way of life and the spirit of the people as well. Overthrown by disastrous events, by climate factors, culture, the militant nature of the nation, he very persistently  uses the color red as a motif for most of his painting. The color of aggression, power, authority, passion, and war has a very deep and person meaning to all of us willing to relate.  Being rather abstract relates to the time of this painting as well, the 1940 and the birth of cubism and surrealism also works its way around the method of his paintings. Surround by nothing but the mountainous karst ( the dissolution of soluble rock such as dolomite and limestone,  where very few fertile plants can survive) of Montenegro, he  starts of painting this harsh landscape. Both ( mountains, kart, certain plants such as pomegranates ) play a very big role when it comes creating a visual identity of the Montenegrin culture. The father of many gruesome paintings and sketches, he thoroughly broadcasts the aftermath left after many horrific wars. Famine, poverty, demolition and dismantling reflects his way of life as well. How once a prosperous culture has fallen in the hand of those who aren't in the slightest deserving or concerned. A very trustworthy picture of the nation, as well ordinary everyday people who reacted to drastic changes  to their environment. Most of his sketches are quite gloomy, dark, sombre and depressing but dramatic as well. A word quite familiar to the mentality of the culture, the over exaggerative Romanticism appeals can be see in literature as well. They emphasizes the color of gray, which represent hopelessness, the impossibility of change, or growth after grievous events. They reflect on his life as a local of the coast, where upon ray of light, you can spy a war ships upon their arrival. Many religious symbols appear as well. First known as Old Church Slavonic, it survived many revivals and evolutionary mishaps. Today there are many version of this famous alphabets but I'm focusing on the Cyrillic script of the southern Slavs. It gives out a very medial essence within the sharp edges of some the letters. Both cursive and print of the cyrillic script results in a very melodically outcomes. Phonetically, every single letter presents one sound and is read as is written, compared to English where a position of the letter in the words represent its pronunciation. Russian Classicist Literature is initially written in cursive Cyrillic script, and draws back the Classicist age of art and literature every artist and designer goes back to as a reflective practice. Some letter are very stern, assertive, monotone, while others represent a more playful way of pronunciation. Some letter resemble pictographs, where the shape and form can be used solely as a graphic symbols. It is considered a national masterpiece, one of the most important pieces of literature within Montenegro and Balkans region. Written by Prince Bishop Petar Petrovic Njegos, ruler of the Principality of Montenegro, at the time, a famous poet and philosopher, father of the modern Montenegrin state.  The Mountain Wreath is considered the code covered by many ethical ideals we like to uphold today as a part of our mentality and culture. Initiated by the gruesome fight for the independent, after 500 years of oppression, Montenegro and the rest of the Balkans are still fighting of the more powerful enemy Ottoman Empire. The poem is something I will center my project around as well. It will cover many stories and myths, regarding back to the people as well. It is filled with Romanticism elements, sombre and tragic stories, as well as local humor.  Religious aspects of the stories tie in with the dramatic war, although a true historical element. Some of the quotes from the poem that will appear as a part of my project are:
1. When things go well tis easy to be good, in suffering one learns who is the hero!
2. Everybody is born to die once, but honour and shame live forever.
3. What is a man but a weak creature?

It clearly states that identity portrays ‘the fact of being who or what a person or a thing is’. It merely describes a connotation, as in culture, tradition, history, perspective, mentality etc. I decided to look into a creating visual representation of my own identity, as native of a small country of Montenegro, as that's an identity I'm most familiar with.I plan on experimenting and researching into the production of collages both analog and digital. I plan to focus on this medium of communication, but my outcome is yet uncertain. My initial idea revolves around a narration of stories I’ve complied throughout research. Also recalling history lessons I’ve attended, as well. The stories circulate around historical facts, buildings, geographical landscapes that are easily recognizable when in association with Montenegro. Their place and time provokes a response within a conceptual idea of a culture and identity of as well. As for materials, I’m searching for a material and textures native to the land, I’ve started researching into geographical components, the relief and key historical sites. I plant to hopefully discover a material that can be turned into an icon. An icon that could play a key ingredient and appear throughout the graphic identity and visual representation. As for colors, nothing is of limits at the moment, expect for timid and bland portrayals, that give out a negative effect. I plan on using a very colorful palette, with a rather metaphorical explanation that will become very clear once the research is completed. I’m yet to research into modernist painters associated with Montenegro, and hopefully mimic a similar colour palette as well, as they seem to use a quite similar tone, as well as a mutual motif.  ‘The representation of a psyche shines through the mentality of a nation’ is a caption I’m trying to visualize and contextualize throughout my project. I aim to bring attention to a micro culture, that is a relatively unknown culture in the vast identity of the European cultural heritage portrayed worldwide. I plan on creating a graphic and visual identity to a weirdly neglected part of Europe, that is vastly overlooked. I like these designs because of their abrupt and in-your-face nature. They hold a variety of different elements, and can be deconstructed to a sole piece (only portraying the stop sign for instance or only portraying the cigarette.) They hold symbolism, showing both an Eye and a Traffic Light, a question mark, as well as, numbers (number 27). One thing I do see, is the repeating of certain icons ( or elements, the spiral or circle is a shape  is seen on both of the posters,  the Dead End sing, too. I also like the fact that they are so many different elements, yet they don't overshadow the illustrations next to me. They are fun to look at, at each glance, you understand a different element of the poster, you also interpret  the icons differently each time you're trying to 'READ' this poster. There is also a system, in which, these icons are shown, shapes that contain the circle are much presented in a bigger resolution. Same goes for the colour. The colour blue is also captured as a part of the bigger squares.
