Holden has mentioned the ducks three times so far in this book. Holden keeps mentioning the ducks because he still wants to know if they are taken away during the winter or if they fly during the winter. I do think that the ducks are a literary symbol if has Holden mentioned them three times already. In my opinion, the ducks may represent what Holden does as an immature teen, which includes his self-isolation and this older image he puts on. Additionally, just like how ducks fly away because of winter, these habits that Holden has as a teen might potentially “fly away” or fade because of adulthood or things that will force him to act maturely and change his habits.

1. So far Holden has mentioned the ducks in the pond 3 times.
2. Holden keeps mentioning the ducks because he is curious about where they go when the lake freezes over. However, I think that this is a symbol for something much deeper in Holden’s life (like his mental health or maturity).
3. As I stated earlier, I think the ducks may represent Holden’s changing mental health and his maturity. Holden is struggling with getting older as he has mentioned how immature he is, but he also struggles with his deteriorating mental health. The death of Allie hit him hard, and this mixed with his performance in school has caused his mental health to worsen. I think he sees the ducks as a sign of hope, and is curious about how they survive the cold, harsh winter. Holden wants to get through this “phase”, and I think his obsession with the ducks pointed to his overarching desire to feel better.

1. Holden mentioned the ducks during the winter time 3 times already in the book.
2. I think the reason he may be wondering where the ducks go is because he himself is lost and seeks guidance. He may want to know where Mother Nature brings them when they no longer have a place to stay (such as himself with school). I do think that the ducks are a symbol because they have been mentioned 3 times already and because Holden seems to be very attached to the idea.
3. Personally, I think that the ducks represent change and this is why Holden is so compelled towards the idea. He wants to find out what takes them away from their natural environment and what happens to them. This connects with him because he just got kicked out of school and has no idea what he’s going to do now that he has left his “environment”/place of stay. Because Holden connects to the ducks on that level, I think he seeks out natures help to discover what happens when someone/something has no place to stay.

Holden has mentioned the ducks in the pond three times. Holden keeps mentioning the ducks because he struggles with change, and we can see this when he talked about his brother’s sudden death. The ducks symbolizes a comfort he might find if he can prove that difficult change aren’t always bad or permanent and how survival is possible even in the harshest environment. It could also symbolize how he need to survive his own emotional “winters”.

Holden keeps mentioning the ducks and how he’s curious where they go in the winter when the lake freezes over. I think it may be a possible symbol for the reason for himself.
3. I think the ducks may represent the people in Holden’s life. Holden may be the pond in the winter in this situation and the ducks are the people in his life that leave him when things get rough to survive. It could be the other way around since there are still holes in my explanation but it’s the first thought I had about the situation and what it might represent.

1. Holden has mentions the ducks 3 times.
2. I think that Holden keeps mentioning the ducks because he is lost himself. I think that he wonders about the ducks because the ducks seem to know what their supposed to do or where there supposed to go, unlike Holden who doesn’t know where to go or what to do.
3. The ducks may represent something that Holden doesn’t want to do or something that he finds difficult to do. Holden doesn’t like change and he finds it hard to change. The ducks are able to change and adapt to what’s happening around them. I think that for this reason Holden finds a great interest in the ducks because he doesn’t understand how to change or how the ducks are able to change. - Nathan Larrabee

1. Holden has mentioned ducks 3 times so far.
2. I think continuously bringing up not knowing where the ducks go represents an internalized feeling he has for himself, where should he go? The ducks obviously know where to go because they aren't extinct, but he doesn't know where. It's the same for him, though he has no idea where to go.
3. I think the ducks represents surviving, even if you think you can't, or you're lost, is possible. In the previous response, I state that Holden often wonders where they really go and how they end up surviving. This further shows that even when it doesn't seem possible, it can be. This is what Holden needs to have as his mindset.

1. Holden mentioned the ducks 3 times so far.
2. In the book he constantly wonders where the ducks go when the pond freezes over. He theorizes that either someone takes away the ducks or that they fly away. He wonders where the ducks go because unlike the ducks Holden doesn’t know where to go. Holden is lost and doesn’t know where to go or what do moving forward.

3. The ducks represent a cycle of change. Every winter the ducks fly away. The ducks always know what to do and where to go. Holden dislikes change. Whenever there is change Holden doesn’t know what to do. Currently Holden is in the biggest of his life. Going from a kid to an adult. He currently is lost and doesn’t know what to do or where to go.

I think that the ducks connect to Holden himself in a way.
3. I think that the ducks represent change and maturity. Holden is seventeen years old but he doesn’t act like a seventeen year old and he knows that. He knows that he has to grow up to be an adult but he doesn’t want to because he loves childhood. He says so many positive things about children but not adulthood. They represent life in a way, in the fact that you have to adapt to challenges that come in your way just like the ducks migrate when the winter comes.
