Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy (HMCRA), is the school I student teach at. I spent my early fieldwork experience at this school as well as my first semester student teaching at this school and I am continuing to spend my time there this spring -- it is a lovely school! It is formally known as Douglass school. The schoolboard renamed it in 1996 to honor Harvey Milk, a civil rights leader who is one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., whom was sadly assissinated in 1978. The school's mission is to empower student learning, teach acceptance and non-violence, as well as celebrate diversity. The school was announced to close in October of 2024 due to lowering enrollment and budget deficit. They were proposed to merge with Sanchez Elementry School. Families, staff, and community members organized protests and rallies voicing their concerns. Later that month they announced no schools would be closed during the 2025-2026 school year.

Harvey Milk Plaza is located at the intersection of Castro and Market st., and commemorates Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. This plaza serves as a gathering space that celebrates LGBTQ+ culture and as a space for marches, activism, and voter drives to take place.
