Realistic Fiction Writing Unit Plan

Day 1

Make sure all students are reading a Realistic Fiction book in class (not for 2022)

Then have students brainstorm a list of possible realistic fiction stories in their writing journal (5 min) (walk around and put a post it on the page they’re writing on)

Share out and add to list on a google doc, project

Tell students to keep thinking of ideas, they can add to their list. In the next few days they will need to choose their favorite idea and begin writing that story.

(part 2 if time) Introduce a Story Arc on doc cam. Have students make their own in their writing journal.

While watching Fireflies Story have students work to fill out story arc. Play story 2 times.

How to find ideas for realistic fiction:

-Observe the world

-Re-read small moments from your writing notebook for story ideas.

- Ask “What books do I wish existed in the world?” What would make interesting character traits, struggles, actions?

- Think about an issue that is important to you and create a character who struggles with that issue

Have students open writing journal to brainstorm list of possible realistic fiction stories

Give students 5 minutes to brainstorm ideas and add to list

Have students circle the idea they are going to write about. Share out. Pick the most common theme to write a class story about.

Tell students we are going to co-write a realistic fiction story about the common story topic a lot of them want to write about.

Students silently brainstorm the arc for this story in their head. They may write notes in their writing journal. (3 min)

Students turn and talk and share their ideas (5 min)

Teacher walks around listening for strong ideas. As a class come up with the beginning, main event, main event, middle, main event, main event, end on a story arc. Vote if necessary.

Day 3

Co-Write Class story using arc. I type and project. Finish up to climax in class.

Day 7

Show one more student example. Remind writing in 3rd person.

Students review story arc, character and scene worksheet, then begin typing story. Make sure your story begins with a strong lead; setting, action, dialogue, or a combination to create mood.

Day 8 Make a strong ending - maybe use dialogue, images, and whole story reminders to make a lasting impression. How was the main character feeling or what were they thinking?
