It glorified the first version of the Klan. In this picture, the streets of Washington are filled with KKK members during a march in August 1925. The NAACP protested premieres of the film. Film boards however were composed almost entirely of whites. Because of this, not many review boards banned the movie. The NAACP also did a public education campaign, publishing articles protesting the movies inaccuracies. The NAACP was completely unsuccessful in banning the movie, and the KKK held a rally shortly after, as millions of American's were influenced by it.

Despite attempting to like a respectable establishment that upheld law and order, the Klan's activities were made up of acts of violence. In this picture a cross burns in the background of a rally in 1925. Originally, the Klan did not burn crosses. The idea was made by Thomas Dixon Jr. in his book "The Clansmen". The cross lightings were often used to intimidate enemies of the Klan. The practice has become incredibly ingrained in racial violence. At this point, most criminal cross burnings don't even involve the Klan at all.

During the 1920s the Klan did many lynchings, floggings, and beatings. In the U.S. most people who performed lynchings were white, and the victims were black. A lot of the time, the lynchings were photographed and even used as post cards. The KKK often took it upon itself to perform these extrajudicial punishments. The U.S. government wasn't going out of it's way to target non whites like they were at the time. After the 1920's, the Klan's lynchings became less and less frequent, to the point where today they don't happen. It is an unfortunate part of our past but one that isn't representative of who America is as a whole.

Two Twelve Sentence Paragraphs

The Ku Klux Klan, with its long history of violence, is the most infamous and oldest of American hate groups. Although black Americans have typically been the Klan's primary target, it also has attacked Jews, immigrants, gays and lesbians and, until recently, Catholics. By 1868, the Klan had become a terrorist organization that its members called "The Invisible Empire of the South." The Klan's first leader was Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had been a Confederate general during the Civil War. Claiming to have extreme pride in their nation, they say that they are building a better society for everyone, despite this clearly not being the case. The Ku Klux Klan, while it's own movement, is a grouping of multiple different chapters and groups that unite themselves under the same name. The KKK had two revivals, one in the 20's as a result of immigration and the other in the 60's as a result of the civil rights movement. The revival in the 20's is very important because it came as a response to the time in our nation when our demographics changed the most. This of course was upsetting to a white nationalist organization who wanted exactly the opposite. The KKK was in it's second big boom during the 20's, and that's why it is especially relevant to this decade. The Klan helped shape the culture and the popular attitude of the nation at the time.

The KKK has affected the state of race relations in our nation since it's beginning. Even today it is the prime example of mistreatment of minorities in the U.S. and it is the number one group outside of the Nazis that people associate with white supremacy. The Klan is one of the longest lasting groups ever conceived in the U.S. despite it's beliefs remaining essentially the same. The one difference that it has taken on in all of it's time is it's current acceptance of Catholics in it's doctrine. No group of people better exemplifies what one of the leading thoughts plaguing the country since it's inception is, fear of the outside world. Throughout all of our history we have been opposed to becoming tainted by foreign bodies. From the British, to immigrants, to communists, the idea remains the same. America has always been a country that sticks to it's own culture and ideas, but very few groups have taken the idea to it's extreme with violent crime. The way it changed culture in the 1920's was that it normalized this viewpoint of foreigners as being of less worth than Americans by birth. It also strengthened the idea that only native born American citizens were real Americans. One of the very real dangers in committing violent acts is not only the immediate damage, but the way it normalizes this kind of behavior in the culture surrounding it.
