This became of interest to me because of how important emotional development and emotional learning is for students. This is somewhat of new research for many educators and is very important to ensure that our students are emotionally available and emotionally reflective. I have learned in my Practicum's to encourage my students to build deep connections and be in tune with their emotions on how they are doing/feeling.

Students confidence is a key factor in their motivation towards Learning. I have seen my practicum in a grade 3 for class that I had one student who was unavailable in terms of motivating himself. He was very bright and one on one was able to do the work provided, but always needed constant redirection to do the work as he felt he did not fit in, in our class. He became very important to me as an educator to ensure that I rewarded the student and praised him at any chance I had. This was to help his confidence in addition to him being more able to take risks in our classroom as it became a safe space for them.

Learning more in depth about how to teach the alphabet and early words to students will be something I want to focus on in the future. Can a garden this past year allowed me to understand the students come into the classroom with a plethora of experiences. Some students are ready new site words while some students were not able to identify any letters. The research has taught me that all students learn at their own pace and what is important is consistency for their development. The quote from the resource shows me that ELLs may benefit from increased exposure to letter sounds and the separation of difficult unknown sounds and taught me not to focus on rote memorization. Students need to see the letters in their daily lives.

Being socially and emotionally available and in tune is important in teaching. In regard to teaching ELL, these students need to be able to not only learn english, but learn and practice treating people with respect and have empathy. This is important because ELL students may face barriers in terms of not fully understanding the language right way, so we need to teach these students that they have to learn about feelings and how what they do can affect others. The quote from the resource shows educators that SEL is not just for benefiting the students in the classroom, it has lasting effects especially for those who are ELL.

Low self-esteem can lessen a student's desire to learn, their ability to focus, and her willingness to take risks. Positive self-esteem, on the other hand, is one of the building blocks of school success; it provides a firm foundation for learning. After learning the importance of building a students self-esteem and confidence I want to hold myself accountable for always placing my students in the centre of their learning and encouraging them to be positive with regards to their self image. This relates to ELLs because they have to feel they are welcomed, accepted, and not made fun of. I have heard many students say that they are made fun of when they do not say something correctly. This pertains mostly to ELLs. As educators, we have to remain vigilant in ensuring that our students are always feeling confident, positive, and successful.
The quote I used from the academic article shows us that students have to be successful in non-academic ways as well. These ELL students in the study spoke more when it was not about academics. This is something teachers need to be aware of and to provide these students with time to do this socialization to increase their BICS.

English letter sounds may also be harder to acquire for ELLs with native sound systems highly discrepant from English. This approach reduces demands placed on working memory facilitating the acquisition of the letter sounds in an emergent language"
