I chose Matisse first and foremost because I appreciate his varied way of working. As an artist who often finds sticking to one style constraining, I often look up to artists who are omnivorous in their methods, but still have a singular and unique artistic identity. I am interested in investigating how Matisse makes his work uniquely his, across many decades, materials, and genres.
