Ulysses by James Joyce

Ulysses is a well-known (but little-read) novel that many people consider to be the greatest novel of the 20th century. It's about a day in the life of a man called Leopold Bloom who lives in Dublin. Although it it is set in Dublin in 1904, it is also based on the ancient story of The Odyssey by Homer. For some people, 900 pages about just one day in the life of one man might sound boring, but it's actually a really fascinating and beautifully written book about everything from love and literature to science and history. A truly encyclopedic, breath-taking book. However, it might be a little bit challenging for intermediate readers!

The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is one of my favourite books ever. I’ve studied Oscar Wilde at school and because of this I’ve decided to read one of his novel. I found it very interesting and I recommend it to anybody. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” suggests a revisitation of the Faust’s myth. The latter deal with a man who sells his soul to the devil to get back whatever he wants such as beauty, success and knowledge. As Faust, Dorian wants to be young and handsome for the rest of his life. One of the main characters of the novel is the painter Basil Hallward. He is Dorian’s friend and he likes painting him. He is a sensitive, reliable and moral man exactly the opposite of Lord Henry. The latter represents the devil in the novel. He is an aristocratic, selfish, rude man who is also too much self-confident. Dorian lose his way because of Lord Henry advices. Infact, in the first part of the story Dorian is innocent and pure but because of Lord Henry he became evil and corrupted. Every time that Dorian commits a crime the portrait that Basil gives to him became uglier because it is the mirror of his soul. In my opinion this is a very interesting book. The Picture of Dorian Gray can makes you think about society and about some important values of it.

In the mood for love is one of the favorite films that i have ever watched. I find it really impressive. This is a Chinese movie which director's of Wong Kar Wai. Also the film is based on love story and set in 1960's. The film is romantic drama but i think this is not an ordinary and boring love story which everyone imagines. Actually it isnt about just love. There is a deeper things. As loyalty, elegancy, virtue... One of the main character's name is Li-zhen. The other is Chow. In spite of passion, there is always distance between Li-zhen and Chow. The film's music which is Yumeji's theme is an amazing. A violin's voice becomes a rituel in the film. Generally, the music starts while the woman walking. The music accompanies with slow-motion scene. So the movie's atmosphere is quite lyrical. Also places, costumes and using light are support with lyrical atmosphere. As a result, i recommend the movie.
