The speaker of the poem is the poet Carl Sandburg, and he represents the people. I know this because in the first sentence he says “I am the people--the mob--the crowd--the mass.” The people are the ones who don’t hold direct power in government yet hold the true power as a large collective. In the first stanza, Sandburg explains that “all the great work of the world is done through me,” the people.

The parallelism and use of this line in sentences like “Terrible storms pass over me, I forget,”(Sandburg, stanza 3) helps the reader to internalize his message that the people forget how they have been hurt and don’t hold others accountable for the pain often enough.

Sandburg structures the poem like someone telling you who they are, and everything that comes with their past and identity. The first stanza introduces the speaker, the second introduces the people’s accomplishments. The third and fourth stanzas explain the narrator’s strength and pain, and the fifth and sixth stanzas list advice on how to become stronger. (Sandburg) I think this order of commentary helps to build meaning because the beginning lays the groundwork in people’s mind of what the subject is and its importance while the end addresses the poet’s intention in writing this piece. We can tell this because the main idea of the text really starts to develop after stanza two. Through this order we can use the background information to strengthen our understanding of the meaning.

I am the People, the Mob is a metaphorical poem that uses literary devices such as Personification. In the text Carl Sandburg quotes “Terrible storms pass over me”, this part of the text makes me believe that the speaker isn’t a person. However, I do believe that nature plays a great part of the text, my

evidence to support my reasoning clearly acquires all of the details in this poem. Sandburg states, “ I am a prairie that will stand for much plowing.. I am the audience that witnesses history. ”. The speaker is very transparent when describing the persona behind the text. With all of this to say, the speaker must be an individual who doesn't acquire that much recognition.

I think that the main idea of this poem is that the people hold so much power and that we could hold much more if we simply remembered how we were hurt in the past. I believe this was the authors intention of writing because the fifth stanza says “when…the people learn to remember…no speaker in all the world say the name: ‘The People’ with any fleck of a sneer.” (Sandburg) This shows how much the author wants to convey the message that people have power and acknowledging the past will only make it stronger.

This poem can be seen as a call-to-action for a coup because it inspires people with feelings of power and it states a person’s civic duty to stand against what is wrong. The author Sandburg tells readers that “the great work of the world is done through [the people].” (stanza 1) This tells the mass that they are responsible for change, and that they have the greatest means to do so. This could be seen as a call to action for political uprising for these reasons. Another part of the text that is particularly insightful is the line where Sandburg says that when “the people learn to remember…[and] use the lessons of yesterday…the mob—the crowd—the mass—will arrive then.” (stanza 6) This part again instills people with knowledge of their power and a passion to do what they see necessary for change.

This power has emerged into all of the great leaders and government systems that have ever existed, and with the same power can these systems be changed or destroyed. Sandburg shows how when "the People use the lessons of yesterday" power will come and so will "the mob--the crowd--[and] the mass." This almost paints a coup as a responsibility and goal that will instill positive and necessary change.

AhlyndiaI don't think there's a literal speaker because it states, “ I am the audience that witnesses history. The Napoleons come from me and the Lincolns. They die. And then I send forth more Napoleons and Lincolns”. This makes it seem as if they are reincarnated the way that the author is putting things into perspective. He represents everyone and does all work, it states in line 1 “ I am the people - the mob - the crowd - the mass”. Right here he is stating as if he’s their voice and their representation.

For this reason, the poem begins with the speaker introducing him/herself and goes on to explain the significance of the workers or the men generating history. The author comments on the hard working men, “ The best of me is sucked out and wasted.”, stating that there isn’t enough notice for the workers. The poem begins with an introduction of the city, and what it is brought upon (the workers), the speaker then begins to strengthen the tone of the text while talking about how there isn’t enough spotlight on these individuals. Structure is a significant skill to use while writing, it controls the major elements of story, and organization of the main idea.

The order of commentary was by protesting and using violence against the government. It helped build on meaning by showing the world what’s going on and how they can help to put an end to the wrong in the situation.
