Linking words are used to connect sentences and ideas in a wide variety of situations.

• Cause and Effect: as a result of, consequently, due to, for this reason, on account of, therefore, thus, owing to.

• Comparison: by the same token, just as/like, likewise.

• Contrast: alternatively, although, conversely, however, nevertheless, nonetheless, whereas.

• Illustration: for example, for instance, including, namely, such as.

• Reason: as, because of, since.

• Result: hence, so.
