I wholeheartedly agree with Sir Ken Robinson when he says “creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.” Creativity should have the same emphasis placed on it as practical subjects like math and social studies and not be “squandered,” as Robinson says. And I believe they can coexist; bringing creativity to any lesson will help students tap into the content of a lesson if they are more stimulated by a creative and innovative, fun and interesting way of learning, and creative forms of student assessment.

What some of our classmates have to say on the subject of creativity and innovation:

"If you ask Ken [Robinson] he would likely support and suggest a total 'revolution' in the education system. Yet that is unlikely, so we must seek other ways to help cultivate creativity rather than crush it. One method could be to embrace the practices of multiple intelligences in our teaching. Therefore, we allow a student's unique gifts and strengths to be put on display in a way that will still fit into what we teach."
-Gilbert Valdez

"Studies are showing that children are spending more time behind computers and other electronic devices, rather than being outside. In my opinion, being outside is an important factor in creativity. Being outdoors (but mainly away from electronic devices) helps promote imagination and spark wonder."
-Alyssa Martinez

"My issue with education and primarily why I want to be a teacher in the first place is because I was only ever taught through one lens. What I mean: 'This is English, this is how you write a sentence, here's a topic, and this is a grade based on that criteria.' I was never encouraged to push further to explore and that's my goal for myself and my classroom. Sounds like a utopia, but I think it's achievable with a little work."
-Jordhan Briggs-Woods

Video: Where Good Ideas Come From with Steven Johnson

If one is open and seeking connections with others who have "half-ideas" online, I suppose chance really does favor the connected. Perhaps my opinion on the subject is a resistance to a more modern way of connecting, since I'm more of a pen-and-paper kind of person. I think Johnson is right when he compares the Beatnik era of coffeehouses to today's format of connectivity, and the internet truly can be a "space where ideas [can] mingle...and create new forms." I think he is correct in his observation that good ideas can be enhanced when they are allowed to "collide with other hunches," in other people's minds, and I'm definitely willing to have an open mind about that.

My own creativity aligns well with the pattern Steven Johnson calls the "slow hunch." Part of my process is to let ideas simmer. I am someone who tends to procrastinate (although I like to call it "working well under pressure"), but that is really in regards to the final product. In my mind, I have been thinking about it and leading up to the final product for weeks. Johnson says great ideas need persistence and "time to incubate," and I can relate to this. Part of my action plan is usually to jot down notes or construct a rough outline before diving in.
