The main text is the trunk and roots. The meta text consist of the branches and leaves that “branch out”. In TSIS they describe meta commentary as, “commenting on your claims”(Pg. 138). The main points are the original thoughts and the meta is the trickling of thoughts surrounding that text. It is a powerful digging tool that gets underneath the surface and adds depth to the piece. This is how we can create flowing ideas for readers to grasp onto and experience a smoother, more clear reading experience.

Metacommentary is a good tool and skill to have when writing for a lot of reasons. I think the biggest reason is because it allows you to come across as a person who can be persuaded and see value in the opposition but does also have their own beliefs. This is opposed to someone who would plant their feet in a perspective and say "I don't care to learn about the other side, I'm not changing my beliefs or opening up to others". The book explains it well on page 139 in a graphic with the main text saying "all writing is conversational." and meta text saying "now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying..."

Meta commentary is useful in writing because it allows the writer to create new or clearer points. This is accomplished by using interpretation and guidance for the main points. Meta is different from the main point because it is like a description or explanation of the argument. this is important because it allows the writer to give the reader more detail. In TSIS it states that the meta-text "guides your readers in interpreting and processing what you've said." (pg. 139) By doing this, it allows the writer to even go dive deeper into the text to build a higher understanding of the topic and allow for clearer flows and connections for the writer.
