The way Langston Hughes read his poem reminded me the way Maya Angelou read her poem "Still I rise." They had the same rhythm in a way. They both had different messages and audience like his message is to not put off your dreams and hers is more about racism. Her poem is about her rising even if the odds are against her but his is more about what if you don't rise.

I really like the line “Or crust and sugar over like syrupy sweet?” It describes how pushing away a dream isn’t always negative. It reminds me of in the book The Alchemist the main character talks to a small shop owner and the owner tells him how he dreams of going to Egypt but will never go, to keep his dream alive. This is because reality can be underwhelming and sometimes it’s better to be infatuated with the idea of something then ever actually experiencing it.

The line “Or fester like a sore— And then run?”
Makes me imagine a situation where someone is getting bullied and to avoid it they begin leaving the things that they love… for example lets say you are getting bullied for knitting people say “Why do you knit its so boring. Thats such a point less hobby. Are you a old lady? Do something more productive like studying.” That person developed a self hatred for it and it became a sore to them. Instead of continuing to love what they love despite what people think they quit and run away. This is just one example of a “sore” causing people to run away.

In the poem the title "Harlem" really makes me think about the dreams, aspirations, hopes of the people in the community of Harlem. The line "what happens to a dream deferred" this line really makes me think about how peoples dreams and asperations have consequences when those dreams don't come true. The poem also reminds me of Lorraine Hansberry's play "A Raisin in the Sun" which got its name from the "Harlem" poem. "A Raisin in the Sun" and "Harlem" both talk about the American dreams that are promised.
