Nick Carraway and Tom Buchanan are now Yale University graduates from New Haven, Connecticut. Following his graduation, Nick enlists in the army to fight in WWI.

This exemplifies how people were and acted in the 1920s. It clearly demonstrates the various degrees of education and how everything was portrayed during this time period, demonstrating how Gatsby worked significantly differently than those who were 'getting educated.'

_________________________________________
A little bit about Tom Buchanan:

“one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven—a national figure in a way, one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors of anti-climax. … there were men at New Haven who had hated his guts” (Chapter 1)

This was Nick’s initial sense of Buchanan. It seems that he peaked too early in his life and has suffered some form of disappointment ever since. Nick’s depiction of Buchanan is what subtly foreshadows Tom’s actions later in the novel.

Until now, the parties' goal has been twofold: to get Daisy's attention or, failing that, to make contact with someone who knows her. Gatsby and Daisy dance which is the only occasion Gatsby truly participates in one of his own parties. Daisy and Gatsby later go to Nick's steps for a half-hour of quiet. They return to the party. Supper soon arrives where Tom expresses his desire to eat with another group, indicating a clear feud between the two. After the party is done, Gatsby is concerned that Daisy did not have a good time. When Nick warns Gatsby that "You can't repeat the past," Gatsby responds idealistically, "Of course you can!" words that hit Nick hard, foreshowing more in the relationship showing how much Gatsby has changed over the years. From barely working and eating to preserving to get the girl he wants.
