A little bit about Tom Buchanan: 

“one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven—a national figure in a way, one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors of anti-climax. … there were men at New Haven who had hated his guts” (Chapter 1)

This was Nick’s initial sense of Buchanan. It seems that he peaked too early in his life and has suffered some form of disappointment ever since. Nick’s depiction of Buchanan is what subtly foreshadows Tom’s actions later in the novel.
