Seseorang itu perlu menguji wau bulannya terlebih dahulu sama ada seimbang atau tidak. Wau Bulan perlu diuji kerana setiap wau memerlukan keseimbangan, kelembutan buluh, cara memasang tali untuk menaikkan wau(teraju).

Antara cara untuk menguji wau :

1-Memegang dihujung kepala wau dan hujung bawah wau dan membiarkan ia bergerak jatuh sendiri. Sekiranya wau tersebut tidak jatuh ia menunjukkan wau tersebut seimbang makala jika wau tersebut jatuh kekiri atau kekanan maka wau tersebut masih belum seimbang. ianya akan menyebabkan wau tersebut berputar sewaktu di udara.

2-Cuba memaut sayap wau tersebut sama ada terlalu keras atau terlalu lembut. Sekiranya sayap wau tersebut terlalu keras, wau tersebut tidak akan bertahan lama di udara kerana pengaliran angin tidak berlaku. Manakala jika ia terlalu lembut akan menyebabkan sayap wau itu patah sewaktu di udara.

3- Menguji kesesuaian pemasangan tali sewaktu dipasang dengan mencuba menaikan wau sedikit sahaja di udara dan melihat sama ada wau tersebut berputar atau tidak dengan tali yang dipasang.

Pembuatan sesebuah wau agak rumit dan memakan masa, dari kerja-kerja meraut buloh untuk dijadikan rangka, mengimbangkan kepak sehingga melukis corak pada kertas di rangka wau tersebut mengambil masa yang lama untuk siap. Rangka buluh tulang belakang wau lebih besar daripada kepaknya, kemudian diikat dengan menggunakan benang mengikut bentuk serta jenisnya.


Rangka yang telah disiapkan akan diwarnakan dengan corak-corak yang menarik oleh pelukis.


Di bahagian kepala atau muncungnya serta dihujung kiri dan kanan kepak, akan dihiasi dengan rambu-rambu halus yang berwarna warni menambah cantik lagi rupanya. Busul akan diregangkan di bahagian belakang tengkuk wau, agar ianya mengeluarkan bunyi dengung apabila diterbangkan diudara. Busur diperbuat dari daun rembia atau mengkuang yang telah direndam dan dilurut lalu dibiarkan kering. Ia berbentuk seperti alat memanah. Tali teraju diikatkan di antara bahu kepak dan tulang belakang sebelah bawah wau bagi mengimbangi wau.
