A defective gene on chromosome 15 (HEX-A) causes Tay-Sachs disease. This defective gene causes the body to not make a protein called hexosaminidase A. Without this protein, chemicals called gangliosides build up in nerve cells in the brain, destroying brain cells.

Phenylketonuria (PKU,) is a rare inherited disorder that causes an amino acid called phenylalanine to build up in your body. PKU is caused by a defect in the gene that helps create the enzyme needed to break down phenylalanine (which is found in all proteins). The disease is inherited as a recessive trait. Slowed development, inability to be well, slow growth, short stature, in extreme cases seizures and mental retardation.

In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food. Symptoms include salty skin, coughing with phlegm, shortness of breath inability to gain weight even if you eat a lot. It is a recessive trait.
