In August of 1973, Jan-Erick Olsson, a convicted criminal, held up the Norrmalmstorg Bank in Stockholm, Sweden which turned into a hostage crisis. This event lasted for five days and was the first crime to be covered on live television in Sweden. This crime was also where the phenomenon, the Stockholm Syndrome, originated because the hostages bonded with their captors and refused to cooperate with the police. The hostages were distrustful of the police since they risked the safety of the hostages. After a five-day crisis, the police launched a tear-gas attack, and the robbers surrendered.

Wikipedia contributors. “Norrmalmstorg Robbery.” Wikipedia, 23 Aug. 2024, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norrmalmstorg_robbery.

The FBI and bank officials could only assume it was an inside job. First, the thief had to get by several sets of guards as well as TV monitors over the entrance. Then he presumably had to have one of the cart’s four keys, to which supposedly only the chief teller, his supervisor and a few bank officers had access. The thief must evidently have been so familiar a figure in the bank that he was able to leave unnoticed with a haul that weighed a mere 20 lbs. Just right for a banker’s briefcase. The FBI believed too that the thief had deliberately ripped off an even $1 million, knowing full well that bank officers would waste precious time attributing the loss to an accounting error. The person was never caught

In 2003, the US invaded Iraq. During this time nearly 1 billion in cash was stolen. The US military subsequently recovered $650 million.

The theft was orchestrated by Qusay Hussein, the son of the then-president, Saddam Hussein, who was said to have authorized it.

Qusay was later apprehended and sentenced, while his father, the president, was killed in gun battles.

The incident is contentious, with some not viewing it as a heist but rather as a presidential directive.

However, the nature of this operation marks it as one of the world’s most significant heists of all time.
