Nel quadro della pianificazione strategica USI 2025–2028, il Prorettorato per l’internazionalizzazione sottolinea l’importanza dell’“internazionalizzazione a casa”, ovvero azioni che permettono di sviluppare competenze interculturali senza partecipare a programmi di mobilità tradizionale.

L’obiettivo è creare un ambiente accademico e lavorativo interculturale, inclusivo e stimolante, offrendo a studenti, docenti e personale la possibilità di acquisire competenze globali anche restando in Ateneo.

Gli obiettivi principali sono:

• Sensibilizzare la comunità USI all’importanza dell’internazionalizzazione e dell’interculturalità attraverso l’iniziativa “Il mondo in USI”.

• Rendere accessibili esperienze internazionali a chi non può viaggiare e arricchire la vita culturale dei campus.

• Sviluppare competenze interculturali per fini professionali attraverso certificazioni dedicate.

• Garantire un ambiente inclusivo, sicuro e stimolante per studenti e personale tramite formazione continua.

Objectives

Within USI’s 2025–2028 strategic plan, the Pro-Rectorate for Internationalisation highlights the importance of “internationalisation at home”, i.e., initiatives that allow students, faculty, and staff to develop intercultural competences without participating in traditional mobility programs.

The aim is to create an intercultural, inclusive, and stimulating academic and working environment, enabling the USI community to acquire global skills while remaining on campus.

Key objectives include:

• Raising awareness of internationalisation and interculturality through the initiative “Il mondo in USI” (“The World at USI”).

• Making international experiences accessible to those unable to travel and enriching campus cultural life.

• Developing intercultural competences for professional purposes through dedicated certifications.

• Ensuring an inclusive, safe, and stimulating environment for students and staff through ongoing training.

Programmi di studio di doppia laurea o laurea congiunta. Si tratta di accordi che consentono agli studenti selezionati nell’ambito di specifici programmi, messi a punto in collaborazione con determinate Università partner, di ottenere un titolo rilasciato congiuntamente dall’USI e dall'Università partner (laurea congiunta) oppure insieme al titolo USI, il titolo di un’Università straniera (doppia laurea). Oltre ad un periodo obbligatorio di mobilità, hanno una componente intrinseca di internazionalizzione che deriva dall'essere organizzati da almeno due università. Double degree and joint degree programmes

Double degree and joint degree programmes are agreements that allow selected students enrolled in specific programmes developed together with partner universities to obtain either:

• a degree jointly awarded by Università della Svizzera italiana and the partner university (joint degree), or

• a degree from USI together with a degree from a foreign university (double degree).

In addition to a mandatory mobility period abroad, these programmes include a strong international component because they are jointly organised by at least two universities.

In collaborazione con il Prorettorato per la ricerca e nell'ambito del programma Euraxess (sotto la responsabilità di Relint) si sta progettando una serie di interventi con l'obiettivo di migliorare l'integrazione dei ricercatori (in particolare stranieri) all'USI. Una prima azione è l'organizzazione di un evento di onboarding previsto per il mese di ottobre 2026.

Euraxess

In collaboration with the Pro-Rectorate for Research and within the framework of the Euraxess programme (under the responsibility of Relint), a series of initiatives is being developed with the aim of improving the integration of researchers — particularly international researchers — at USI.

A first initiative is the organization of an onboarding event scheduled for October 2026.

SIETAR Switzerland is supported by USI as a sustaining member of the network, a diverse community of individuals and organisations united by the goal of promoting intercultural awareness.

From 3 to 5 June 2027, USI will host the annual conference of the Swiss chapter.

training courses

In collaboration with the USI HR Training Area, organization of internal training courses for USI staff. A first example is the course “Migration, Asylum Law and Integration”, organized in collaboration with SOS.

Gli/le studenti/esse dell'USI sono invitati/e a offrirsi come buddy, impegnandosi ad assistere gli/le studenti/esse internazionali durante il loro scambio, dandogli la possibilità di vivere un'esperienza internazionale, incontrare persone provenienti da tutto il mondo, migliorare le proprie competenze linguistiche, esplorare nuove culture e stringere nuove amicizie.

The buddy programme, organised by the relint Service and ESN Lugano, aims to support exchange students at USI and help them integrate into the university community by putting them in touch with local students.

USI students are invited to volunteer as buddies, assisting international students during their exchange, which gives them the opportunity to enjoy an international experience, meet people from all over the world, improve their language skills, explore new cultures and make new friends.

Intercultural competences for sustainable societies (Spring 2027)

SDG 4: Quality education: inclusive educational environments, promote dialogue between cultures, equitable access to learning for students from diverse backgrounds.

  Airolo and the Gotthard, and the “Route of Peoples,” have historically been a crossroads of people, languages, and cultures, not only a trade route, but also a symbolic site of intercultural interaction between Northern and Southern Europe, not without its challenges.
