Leaders of our Future by Alejandra Guerrero

In this week's Padlet I will be highlighting the realities most women in leadership roles face. While this is a phenomena that affects all women, high profile political leaders who identify as women often face increased scrutiny. Our society's implicit bias against women affects our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. I think anyone paying attention to the last few elections can see the way in which political leaders who are women face unique challenges. As people observe more women serving as strong leaders and pioneers of change, it will no longer seem strange that a woman is in charge. Even though women may typically face more challenges than men in leader roles, there are signs of change. This is and important issue because the lack of representation of women in leadership, especially within politics, can leave the needs of an entire group ignored misunderstood.

This Ted Talk video discusses the ways in which strong women face issues regarding likability. Leadership associated with masculine traits has detrimental effects. She discusses the ways in which women who are helpful are liked much more by society, however these women do not get the the recognition they deserve. Women should be recognized for their contributions as leaders rather than being judged based on perceptions of femininity.

This article goes into depth on how women in politics face discrimination. The example of the 2020 election and how Kamala Harris face multiple levels of discrimination because of her gender identity and ethnicity. The challenges of gender stereotypes for women leaders are compounded by their other cultural identities. Our society expects women to be "kind, supportive, and warm" which aren't exactly traits of a leader. The article also goes into the intersectional differences in women's experiences and bias faced.

I chose this political cartoon of Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez because it depicts her head as a balloon or an 'airhead'. This kind of humiliating rhetoric questions women's abilities to be political leaders. Her button, which reads Ocasio-Cortez Palin, is a double jab at women in politics. Sarah Palin another woman in politics who ran as the VP candidate. Trying to group AOC with Sarah Palin is a tactic to paint women in politics as a monolith of weakness.

This inspiring quote by Malala Yousafzai, one of the most inspirational women activists. As an outspoken proponent for girls' right to education, Malala's life was put in danger because of her beliefs. Understanding that makes this quote smooch deeper. Being a leader and an activist for the education of Pakistani girls despite the extreme challenges is something that only someone with lived experiences would fight to near death for. We need to uplift women doing this work because that is the only way women will reclaim their rights.

Despite being filled with ideas, her personality trait was really holding her back. As I listened to this podcast, I not only felt like I had learned a lot, but it also made me think about how much of this is a result of socialization.

One of the most popular posters in media history is Rosie the Riveter.
Since the 1940s Rosie the Riveter has stood as a symbol for women in the workforce and for women’s independence. I think this photo has continued to evolve its meaning and it can now be seen as a symbol for women's leadership. This depiction is one of the first showing women as strong, one of the most important traits in a leader.
