We’d decorated gingerbread houses and enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies before settling down to watch a Christmas movie-Frosty the Snowman I think. I recall looking over at my family and breathing a sigh of thankfulness for all the blessings I’d been given and feeling so at peace with my life and grateful for a happy healthy family. As we sat snuggled under the blankets, I watched my children smile and sing along with the Christmas music, and soaked in the memory of how much they were enjoying the holiday season. Our Christmas lights on our mantle bounced off our bay windows so it felt like we were in a kind of fairyland, and I remember feeling like time sort of stood still.

List 5 things that make you happy: | Being at the beach Being squeezed in between my kids on the couch even when there is tons of room for them to sit somewhere else Holding my husbands hand My husband making me laugh Disneyland

What did you feel? | I felt like I failed as a mother. I felt like I was going to let my husband down. Impatience as we had to sit in the hospital emergency room for hours before they took me back to be examined. The cold waiting room of the Clovis Community Hospital waiting room

Smell? | I can still smell the antiseptic scent of the hospital emergency room. My 18-month-old daughter’s Johnson & Johnson shampooed hair as I held her for comfort.

Hear? | The sound of the wailing patients in pain in the emergency room. My husband playing The Jungle Book for my daughter on his phone. The automatic hospital doors opening and closing. The sound of the beeping hospital monitors

Taste? | My salty tears

See? | The patients in pain in the emergency room. My daughter’s smile

Describe: | I’d woken up in the middle of the night with signs that I needed to go to the hospital. I was very early in my pregnancy, and we didn’t have anyone to watch our daughter, so we had to take her with us to the emergency room. We sat in agony for hours waiting to be seen thinking that we were going to lose the baby. Luckily, he survived, but it was the worst feeling I’d ever experienced.

List 5 things that make you sad: | Thinking of my relatives and animals who’ve passed away When my children lie to me When people don’t treat others with respect Movies where characters are separated from their families-especially when children are separated from their mothers Knowing there are children who are neglected

Title | Because I could not stop for Death

Page # | 201

Explain why you like it | I am a fan of Emily Dickinson’s poems because I know she was a somewhat mysterious figure in American literature. She has a unique style that I enjoy interpreting, and I like how she personifies Death in a unique way. It’s not that I enjoy the thought of death; I just thought her poem brings about an interesting way of coming to terms with our own immortality.

Identify two words or phrases that are particularly cool: | Because I could not stop for Death—He kindly stopped for me—
We passed the School, where Children stroveAt Recess—in the Ring—We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain—We passed the Setting Sun—
