Needs to be incorporated, with basic foundations of social studies. They will be more likely to remember it as well.

I want to address their backgrounds and culture, but at times feel like I also need to provide some "common knowledge" so that the students are not at a loss when faced with information that is embedded in traditional K-12 (or K-8) curriculum.

The conflicts units have hundreds of options which we can teach about. Why not poll the students in advance to see what would interest them and feel relevant for them to learn about? We tried it last year and the kids really appreciated the choice in the curriculum.
