The Engawa is a traditional Japanese house area where many outdoor events are held. It is usually between the Shogi (screen doors made of wood and paper to separate rooms from the Engawa) and the Amando ( storm shutters made of wood that separate the Engawa from the outside). The Engawa typically faces a courtyard and can be kept opened or closed as the temperature fluctuates. Also, it can be decorated with various items like, paintings, calligraphy, byubo (folding screens), or ceramics.

Tatami are thick, woven straw mats that measure about one by two meters. The straw mats were originally only used by the wealthy until the became more common so the less wealthy Japanese could afford them. At first, only the wealthy could afford their whole room to be covered in Tatami but, they became even more common and almost everyone could have their rooms covered fully in Tatami. They can be found in almost every Japanse home and the are so popular that the rooms of the home are measured by how many mats can fit in the room. Lastly, any type of footwear (even slippers) are to be taken off before stepping on the mat.

Furo baths are made out of wood or metal. The water is typically heated to 110 degrees or higher. Before getting in the bath, the bather washes themselves to be more clean. If you are in a large family, there is a strict order in which the family bathes. The elders would go first, then the children, finally, if there were any children that were too young to bathe by themselves, the mother would go in there with them.
