Jeannette, Brian, and Lori worked hard through school and saved up a lot of money in order to leave Welch.

"You've got to get right back in the saddle. You can't live in fear of something as basic as fire."

This image reflects The Glass Castle because Jeannette was on her own path with Brian and Lori. No matter how many times they had to move or how much adversity they faced, they still worked hard and persevered to get to where they are now in life.

This was a quote from Rose Mary after Jeannette was badly burnt in a fire. She had returned from the hospital and went back to cooking hot dogs which was the reason of her being burnt in the first place.

Rex’s addiction to booze had taken over his life and all the kids lost respect for him after he broke their piggybank to get more alcohol. He also was so drunk one Christmas that he burned down the tree and ruined everyone’s day.

“I could hear people around us whispering about the crazy drunk man and his dirty little urchin children, but who cared what they thought?”

This image accurately shows how much Rex probably drank a day. Rex fought so hard to end his addiction but they would eventually fizzle out after a couple of weeks. He took this to an extreme by strapping himself to the bed and wouldn't allow himself to leave. He even took a job at a summer resort from a hospital administrator and he was doing really good until Rose Mary's neediness and selfishness manipulated him into coming home and drinking.

People around them knew the Walls family was headed by "the town drunk" who all the bar owners knew. The

addiction he has is noticed by the town and the money he earns or steals goes toward the addiction and not towards providing for his family.

The Walls kids worked hard to get to where they are right now. Jeannette worked hard enough to become a journalist for MSNBC where she was at the release of the book. Growing up in that tough environment has built her into the strong woman that she is today.

“If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim”

This image shows how much work Jeannette, Lori, and Brian had to do to get out of Welch and move. Their other sibling, Maureen, didn't have to work as hard since the Walls kids decided to get her out of there. Jeannette got a job at a fast food-type of restaurant as soon as she moved to New York and worked her way to a journalism job.

Jeannette seemed to have carry this mantra throughout her childhood. She knew that her parents weren't going to help her. This built her into a successful author who can provide for her family, unlike her parents.

Rex disappointed his family often by losing his jobs and not working. He spent most of his days drinking and was so addicted that he broke the kids' piggy bank to get money to get booze. On the other side of the coin, Rose Mary was sitting on $1 million worth of land and didn't give it up because she didn't want to sell her father's land. Jeannette was upset because they wouldn't have had to live in poverty.

“You mean you own land worth a million dollars?” I was thunderstruck. All those years in Welch with no food, no coal, no plumbing, and Mom had been sitting on land worth a million dollars?”

This image portrays the broken piggy bank that the Walls kids called Oz. He took all the money and went to the bar and got his drinks. All of the kids lost respect for him.

Jeannette was mad. Rose Mary was such a sentimental person that she would not get rid of anything. I think if Rose Mary was sitting on a billion dollars, she still would not even consider selling the land. Instead, she and her family will live in squats and eat cat food.
