When I first started high school, I was very nervous. I did not like presenting and I was not a person who would willing volunteer for things. In grade 11 though I enrolled myself in the A-Team course. We started off the year in the summer time so that we could run the Grade 9 orientation, this was my first big event and I knew I needed to give it my all.

The days leading up to the event we had our own little A-Team orientation. We learned how to run the games, what the layout of orientation was going to be and what our roles were going to be on the day of. Mr. O saw that I knew all of the games and I was doing really well when presenting to my little group so he asked me if I was comfortable to run one group of Grade 9's all by myself without a partner. I of course said yes. I knew that meant that I was stepping out of my comfort zone but, I was up for the challenge.

On orientation day, I was given my package with the list of student's names and the materials we needed for the games we were going to play. When the gym portion was done, i collected my group and went to our assigned classroom. It was all running smoothly until the kids started to get comfortable. There was this one girl who just decided that she did not want to participate anymore and she felt like she could do what she pleased because I knew her brother. Then there were some who still had not opened up to the group yet so they did not want to participate in the final group game. I needed to nicely tell the girl that she had no say in what she does and I needed to find a way to get the shy students to participate. Which I finally ended up doing by just being assertive to the girl and by being warm and welcoming to the shy students.

I realized after the in class, by myself portion was finished and I was taking the kids back to the gym, that I could do this. I could be a leader as the students looked up to me. I just ran their orientation by myself and it went well.

After this event, I felt more comfortable with everything. I participated in my classes more that year and in Leadership whenever Mr.O would ask the class for volunteers for any event or task, my hand would be the first to shoot up. I presented more and I overall felt more confident.

After the leadership course has finished, I went on summer break feeling more relaxed and at ease. This is because I did not have to stress about my Grade 12 year and whether or not I was going to have the same lunch as my friends, lots of presentations to complete or if I was going to have to participate a lot in class. I did not have to stress because I knew that it was all going to be okay. If I did not have the same lunch as my friends, I would make new ones on that lunch. If I had a presentation, I would go up and present. If I needed to participate in class, I would and it would all be okay because of the many skills I learned throughout the leadership course.

I had a new found confidence and passion to lead and work with people.
