While the act made it through congress it encouraged a lot more controversy. Kansas became a breeding ground and settlers with pro and anti slavery poured over the border of Kansas. Two governments were set up one supported and the other one was against. Violence broke between the pro and anti slavery and Kansas became known as "bleeding Kansas." It was a key event of the 19th century because it raised the popularity that slavery could be extended where it was once banned.
