This was a key event of the 19th century because it helped increase the slave trade and made slavery possible. This event lead to the civil war because tribes were engaging in the trade of these enslaved people that lead to violence and that then lead to the starting of the civil war. Something that also lead them to the civil war was the power of the national government that forbid slavery in territories.

The land was divided into territories and the population grew and could apply to become states. Illinois was a free state and Alabama was a slave state. Missouri wanting to get admitted became a big debate because the South would loose there voting powers and its power to block anti-slavery bills. They fought against Missouri being added to the union as a free state. This was an important event of the 19th century because it was between the North and the South and was passed by the U.S congress that allowed for the Missouri to be admitted as the 24th state. This event had also lead to the civil war because it was struck down as unconstitutional which had lead to a war.

The Missouri compromise stopped the debate of congress but there was still an issue of slavery. They sent many anti-slavery petitions to Washington D.C and avoided addressing these until 1836. In 1831 over more then 50 white people were killed which lead to stricter slave laws. In 1846 a war with Mexico broke out and U.S won the war. Congress had to decide weather or not they would allow slavery in the new land. It was a key event of the 19th century because it admitted California as a free state and left Utah and New Mexico to decide for themselves weather to be a slave state or a free state. This compromise lead to the civil war because it was an effort to set regional disagreements over the state of American Slavery.

In 1854 Senator proposed dividing the land into two areas which were Kansas and Nebraska which they would then decide the issue of slavery. While the act made it through congress it encouraged a lot more controversy. Kansas became a breeding ground and settlers with pro and anti slavery poured over the border of Kansas. Two governments were set up one supported and the other one was against. Violence broke between the pro and anti slavery and Kansas became known as "bleeding Kansas." It was a key event of the 19th century because it raised the popularity that slavery could be extended where it was once banned. That was also the cause for the civil war because it was a debate between the U.S which caused the civil war.
