The greatest obstacle to the development of strategic planning in the small-sized Russian companies is lack of evidence identifying it as a tool for achieving leadership positions in the market. Using questionnaire and individual interview, this study analyzes the necessity for implementation of strategic planning in small-sized companies in order to improve its competitiveness. The major findings that emerged were as follows: a) Strategic planning including setting goals and objectives, allows the organization to achieve higher results and increase its efficiency even in crisis conditions. b) Strategic planning is a constant process of determining and working out the goals and objectives of the enterprise, based on taking into account its own resources, the desires of customers, the state of the external environment. с) In the case of absence of proper planning companies may lose their position in the market or even cease to exist. In addition, this study confirms the fact that strategic planning is very poorly developed in small-sized Russian companies. Further studied are needed to consider the application of strategic planning to occupy leading positions in the market using examples of well-known small-sized companies.
