  • Parental involvement usually refers to the practices of parents, guardians, and caregivers who support their school-aged children in learning. There are many reasons why parents may not be actively involved with their children’s education. 

  • Parents, having a high workload or they don’t live in the same house. Some take a more “hand-off” approach as they want the school to handle more academic matters, so having a low parental involvement has a direct impact on student performance because they do not have a support network outside of the formal learning environment. 

  • Some parents are not  aware of the Digital Knowledge to monitor their kids' classes particularly during Covid Pandemic online schedule for the classes. Poverty is another cause  by which they are unable to afford the digital devices and data charges monthly to make their kids learn online and having limited family resources.

  • During the pandemic it is a dire need to study how online and offline  education shows impact on students' learning and their cooperation and coordination from the parents at their home. 

  • Finally I want to study the role of parents in the English learning of their children during COVID-19 pandemic in view of  Private Vs Government management Schools of Rural Vs Urban areas. 

  • I am presenting a Small part of my Ph.D study i.e  "A study of parents' of secondary school ESL learners” is carried out with a sample to analyze their responses on their role in  English learning of their children during COVID-19 pandemic.

  • A Bilingual(Telugu and English) Questionnaires are prepared and  administered in hardcopies  to the 16 Parents of 4 Govt Schools from 2 Urban Area of Hanamkond  and 2 Rural area of Jayashankar Bhupalpally Districts where the schools having more than 200 students.

    •  16 Parents of 4 Private schools from 2 Urban Area of 1 Hanamkonda, 1 Warangal District  and  2 Rural area of 1 Jayashankar Bhupalpally,1 Mulugu Districts where the schools also having more than 200 students.

    • the consent of the parents has been taken  to participate in the study only after explanation of the objectives of the study and confidentiality of their information. 

    • Where the  parents are found illiterate, a scribe has been assigned to explain the questions and  record their answers in the questionnaire.

    • The responses have been entered in Google Questionnaire which is prepared to extract the auto summary charts,pie diagrams to analyse the question wise data.

    2. there are ways to engage them on an individual level so that they are aware of their children’s areas of development and strong suits; For example, hosts monthly virtual parent-teacher meetings using a video conferencing system as
    • Enable message boards or closed social media groups where parents can exchange ideas and provide feedback.
    • Develop an e-newsletter to let parents know about Virtual  Class projects and upcoming deadlines.
    • Host online "open houses" that allow parents to view completed work and discuss the school quarter / semester.
    • online workshops that highlight common tips for connecting the parents. they may spend ten minutes a day reviewing online work and checking the online bulletin board.

What made me take up this research project?

    • Although the government and the private management established various modes of education i.e online and offline  to students during the Covid 19 pandemic.
    • Despite the provision of education through a variety of media, it can be observed that there is a lack of parental encouragement locally.
    2. How are the findings of this research applicable for my 
    teaching/classroom? 
     
    • It is advised to consult frequently with the parents of the students to know their opinions over learning of their children.
    • It is mentioned that to conduct awareness programs to the parents on Dos and Donts over online or offline teachings for Govt school parents.
    • It is suggested to the Govt to provide Digital means of communication specifically to the Govt schools.
    • It is recommended Online and Offline English Teaching Material should be shared with the students properly and having discussion with the parents. 

    3. In what way am I planning to pursue my ‘research’ in future? 
     
    Further I continued my research to the teachers and as well as the parents to elicit the opinions over the online and offline education system during the pandemic to know the challenges which are being faced by them.

  • It's found that awareness on the schedule / timetable of online and offline classes which are being telecast by the state education department  should be brought to the parents properly.

    • Parents should be motivated to help their children in improving their English environment  by providing various Digi facilities like English Movies, News, Cartoons etc

    • It is found that parents teachers meeting should be organised either online or offline regularly to exchange the views of parents over the development of the children in English language

    • It is also noticed that the education system during  covid-19 pandemic  should be flexible and accessible to the parents easily.

    • It is also suggested to the concerned governments to provide digital facilities at the Government schools because the Government School parents are not being communicated properly by the head of the institutions and teachers Regarding the attendance, feedback  and progress of their children etc.

    • It is Suggested to extend the school/ Teachers support to the students by providing additional worksheets, visit in their homes frequently and having a good rapport with the parents accordingly. 

    • It is suggested that English Learning home assignments of students  should be encouraged  to do with their parents.
