Reading the tutee's writing aloud is also beneficial to the tutor. It makes a huge difference in how both the tutor and tutee interpret the tone of the essay when the writing is read aloud. For instance, some students are able to process things better when others are reading for them. They are able to hear how their writing sounds through someone else's mouth. Some tutees may not want their essay read out loud at all. While I've only experienced this once or twice, it is usually because their topic is very personal to them and don't want to take the chance of others over hearing. Try not to stop during your reading every time you see a grammatical error. Once on the beginning may be fine, but don't let that be the main focus of the session.

If the tutee is clearly uncomfortable with having their writing read a loud, don't force it on them. It could be for the best

If there is a part of the writing that is confusing take note of it!
