The Parthian campaign was a failure. Antony returned to Alexandria, where he and Cleopatra supervised a celebration called "the Donations of Alexandria." Octavian starts a propaganda war against the couple, saying that Antony gave Roman possessions to a foreign woman and wants to move the capital from Rome to Alexandria.

The Roman Senate declared war against Cleopatra. The naval Battle of Actium, fought off the western coast of Greece between Octavian's forces and the combined forces of Cleopatra and Antony, was a disaster for the Egyptians. After both were present at the battle, Cleopatra and Antony fled to Egypt.

Antony received the false news that Cleopatra had died, which lead him to fall on his sword. He was carried to Cleopatra's retreat and died there. Soon after the death of Antony, Cleopatra committed suicide. It is believed that she allowed herself to be bitten by an asp, a symbol of divine royalty. Cleopatra and Antony were buried together. Egypt became part of the Roman Empire after Cleopatra's death.
