One of the unique aspects of the Canadian public school system is the amount of decentralization and the degree to which schools are run by local school authorities. Each province is divided at the local level into school districts governed by a superintendent and a locally elected school board (or board of education) that decides instructional policies, hires teachers, purchases equipment and generally oversees the day-to-day running of schools. There is also a parent advisory counsel for classroom management that can get materials for the classroom
