Overview of the Chapter:
We finally take a dive into Russian history. Why did Russians become Orthodox? In this post hopefully you will learn a little something about it.

Princess Olga was the queen at the time. After Igor I died, Princess Olga took control of the throne. Olga decided to search for a religion for Russia. When Olga came into power she decided to visit Constantinople, there she met the Byzantine emperor. The leader of the Constantinople orthodox christian church decided to teach Olga the orthodox christian customs. She learned the religion like a sponge absorbing water. She decided to adopt christianity for the country. Soon after Olga died, her grandson Vladimir the great sent scouts to different countries to find new religion and the scouts loved the architecture and reported it to the Vladimir. Vladimir was amazed with the scouts report and forced everyone in the country to become an orthodox christian. Vladimir threw all of the statues of the previous gods into a river. After that, russian citizens became orthodox christian.

Princess Olga traveled to Constantinople and studied Orthodox Christianity. Once she returned to Kiev, she encouraged her people to practice Orthodox Christianity. They refused and wanted to stay true to their gods of nature, wind, and the fields. Even her own son refused! Years later many different statues of gods still stood in Kiev. Princess Olga's grandson Prince Vladimir was interested of powerful religions. Instead of many gods he wanted a religion that followed one god, a religion that was monotheistic. He asked his nobles for their opinion on his thoughts. The nobles told him he should send ten men to go and see the different religions. When the returned, the told the prince the were the most impressed with Orthodox Christianity. They told him the church's beauty was magnificent. So then Prince Vladimir converted to a Orthodox Christian just like his grandmother who had also influenced the prince's decision. There was another factor too. As mentioned before he wanted a religion that only worshiped one god. This left him to choose from Judaism, Christianity, or Islamic. He did not want to choose Judaism, and did not want to choose Islamic because it had a strict rule the prohibited drinking alcohol and eating pork. This left them with Christianity. After it was decided Prince Vladimir would convert to a Orthodox Christian, he forced all of Russia to also convert to a Orthodox Christian. Then, to represent that Russia was converting to Orthodox Christianity, he took the photos and statues of their old gods and put them in the river. - This is how Russia became a Christian country.

Early Russians came in contact with other countries through trade and learnt about religions such as Christianity. Christianity worked its way into Russia from the Byzantine Empire. Greek missionaries from Constantinople brought Christianity to the Russian city of Kiev in about 900. These missionaries taught some of the early Russians about Christianity. Princess Olga traveled to Constantinople, learned about Christianity and on her return to Kiev encouraged people to practice Orthodox Christianity. Her grandson Vladimir converted to Orthodox Christianity and forced all the people of Kiev to convert too. He ordered the statues and pictures of old Russian gods and goddesses destroyed by having them thrown into the Dnieper River. Thus, Russia became a Christian country.

Christianity in Russia spread through Orthodox Christian missionaries sent from the Byzantine Empire. Princess Olga traveled to Constantinople and learned about Christianity.
