In people younger than 16 bone marrow transplants or stem cell transplants can be used and offer the only potential cure for SCD. However the risks are too high for those over 16 and donors are very hard to find, so most of the time treatment is found with medication and vaccines. Blood transfusion is another option but the risk of infection and iron buildup are not safe. In future years we may research more into gene therapy and its effectiveness towards SCD but it is not fully developed or available to the public for use.

The first report of Sickle-Cell Disease or SCD was by Ernest E. Irons in 1910, when he saw what he described as "elongated sickle shaped cells"in a patient. More and more cases of this were reported and it wasn't until 1933 that Lemuel Diggs made the connection between genetic traits. Further understandings have shown that the affected hemoglobin gene has a higher affect on ancestral malaria stricken areas meaning that 80% of SCD carriers are African-American.

Sickle-cell disease is a common genetically inherited blood disorder. It gets the name sickle-cell because the red blood cells look like a crescent sickle shape instead of a full circle. Because of the irregular shape the red blood cell's hemoglobin, the part that carries blood throughout the body, is not smooth and flexible like normal. This causes a block of blood flow. 80,000-100,000 Americans have sickle cell disease.
