This event is important because Marguerite did not speak for a long time. Margueritte walked through the shops, the school, the church without speaking and in silence. Mrs. Flowers was kind to Marguerite. She was the person who helped her out of Margueritte's silence. A evidence in the chapter 8 page 41 say "  She   had   the   grace  to  appear   warm   in   the  coldest   weather, and  on  the  hot   Arkansas  summer,  days  she  seemed  cool." The days with Mrs Flowers were prettier even if they were bad. Mrs Flowers was the   lady   who   threw  her first   lifeline to Margueritte. She makes a good influence.

When she was growing up in Stamps it was the time of segregation. As we know segregation was something that affected black people emotionally and physically. Marguerite was affected as a child, we can say this because she did not loved her black  ugly  dream,  and  she  real  hair,  which  was  long  and  blonde. 
" Because   I   was   really   white   and   a   cruel   magician   had  turned   me   into   a   too-big   Negro   girl" as we she didn't have self-esteem.

In Christmas Marguerite  and Bailey received  gifts  from  they mother and father something that have never happen before. Marguerite couldn’t  believe that her mother   would   laugh  and  eat  oranges  in  the   sunshine   without   her   children. Also because she thought they were dead. " Until   that   Christmas   when   we  received   the   gifts,  I   had   been   confident   that   they   were   both   dead. " she probably say that because they were never in her life.

Marguerite many times went to sleep with her mother when she has nightmares in her large bed with Mr. Freeman. After  the  third  time  in M other’s  bed, She thought  there  was   nothing   strange   about   sleeping   there. One day she wake up and she felt something that was soft and she says that  she didn't   experienced   it   in   all   the   years   of   sleeping  with her  Momma.  "Freeman  was  awake  and  gone,  but   his   eyes   were   open   and   both   hands   were   above   the   cover.  I   knew,  as   if   I   had   always   known,  that   it   was   his   “thing”   on   my   leg. He  said,  “Just   stay   right   here,  Ritie,  I  ain’t   gonna*   hurt   you.”  We can see here that she got raped.
