In general, would your family be classified as formal or informal?

My family would be considered a formal family. I have a mom, dad, and one sister. My whole extended family structure represents a formal family as well. I grew up with both of my parents present and supporting my sister and I through my whole childhood. My family values time together, trust, and communication. Since my family values time together we do family dinners every weekend since they live in Utah. I would consider these characteristics to mimic a formal family.

What was the attitude toward the elderly?

Growing up "respect your elders" was taught to me. I always looked up to the elders in my life and would respect what they said. My parents had me say yes/no ma'am/sir when I was talking to people older than me. I always respected the elders in my life, as well as admired them. A great example of this would be my grandparents. My whole life I have looked up to my nana, I loved to follow her around throughout the day and help her without whatever she needed help with. Elders weren't necessarily put on a pedestal, but I was always taught to respect them, and in many cases I admired and looked up to the elders in my life.

When it came do major decisions in my family my parents would sit down and discuss and make the decisions together. If it involved my sister and I they would talk to us as well, but they would usually talk to each other first. Even with smaller decisions in my family my parents would still consult each other on what they felt was the past decision.

Was conflict dealt with a direct or indirect matter?

Whenever there was conflict my family would deal with it in a direct matter. My family would sit down with whoever was involved in the conflict and talk through it and work it out. My family felt that dealing with conflict in a direct matter was the most effective, as well as prevented conflict in the future. This has allowed me to now deal with conflict in a direct matter. Whenever I have a conflict or situation to deal with I go directly to where it is coming from to talk to, and figure out a solution. I am glad that my family dealt with conflict in a direct way because it taught me to do the same, and I feel that dealing with conflict in a direct way has helped me solve problems.
